So the Felicia/Caddy pickup was based on the Favorit, an old Skoda original design... interesting. I didn't think VE left any of the old cars around, i thought they would have just replaced them with badge engineered models just as they did with all of SEAT and Skoda's other cars.

Interesting thread. I didn't know about most of these rebadges but the subaru legacy rebadge was especially interesting. And that VW Taro truck just confuses me. I see the truck and think Toyota but then see the VW badge and go WTF.

Not really a ripoff, the E31 costs around 9k, while an r8 costs 120k. And the 8 series went for roughly the same when brand new.

IIRC, the D-Max only shares platforms with the Canyon/Colorado/I-Series. I don't remember exactly why it wasn't sold here, but I don't think the other trucks are true rebadge jobs of it.

D-Max and US-spec Colorado/Canyon/I-series share door stamping, some windows, and a couple of random pieces of exterior trim. Not a true rebadge in the sense of the word but not totally different either. Kind of like Ford Mondeo --> Ford Contour transformation.

However, The Chevy Colorado/Holden Rodeo (which was renamed Holden Colorado) sold in Asia and Australia is a D-Max rebadge. Convoluted... yes?

Isuzu D-Max (original flavor)

Holden Rodeo/Colorado (1st order rebadge of D-Max)

Chevy Colorado (Thailand - rebadge of Holden Colorado which is a rebadge of D-Max)

Great thread, sorry I have nothing to contribute. I understand the reasoning and basis for makers to rebadge a car for different markets, but where does it makes sense for some of these that have been rebadged with 4 or 5 different auto makers (i.e. Chevy/Isuzu/Honda/Opel Trooper)?

Probably not all that obscure to most Canadians, the Isuzu Impulse was briefly sold in Canada as the Asuna Sunfire:

The Asuna brand was very short-lived, and only had three models.

The above is an Asuna "SE", clearly an Opel Kadett/Vauxhall Astra/Pontiac LeMans/Passport Optima. The Asuna version didn't even have a name, it was just trims: either SE or GT.

The last Asuna was a version of the Suzuki Sidekick:

It was called Sunrunner.

The Sunrunner replaced the GMC Tracker

and was itself replaced by the Pontiac Sunrunner.

So, for those who lost count, the Suzuki Sidekick was sold in Canada at various times as the Sidekick, Geo Tracker, Chevrolet Tracker, GMC Tracker, Asuna Sunrunner and Pontiac Sunrunner.

Well, it wasn't like GM was going to sell the Suburban in Australia as a Chevy... nothing wrong with rebadging it as a Holden. I see no problem with that...

As I said before in this thread, Australia is the land of obscure rebadges, largely due to geography and Govt policy. Aussie rebadges can fill a whole thread by themselves. Another relatively obscured one... Holden Drover aka Suzuki Samurai

Rebadging the same car as a Holden in Oz, Pontiac in Canada, Chevy in the USA, Opel/Vauxhall in Europe, and Suzuki pretty much everywhere else makes some sort of sense because it's those brand's home markets (or for some reason or another are more saleable). People in Oz are more receptive to buying "Australia's own car", even if that car was made in the USA with Japanese designs and engineers from Europe, and it's badged as any of 6 different models elsewhere.

The laws you speak of are also partly responsible... hence many Toyotas going there as Holdens. I would really like to get into Australia's crazy car laws some day...

The first-gen Suzuki Swift/Geo Metro became the "new" second-gen Subaru Justy (outside the USA):

They did make an AWD version of it.

It replaced Subaru's home-grown first-gen Justy.
