for the forum!

After running numerous polls in our forums, campaigning endlessly to try and convince VW to offer the Golf R here and all the behind the scenes negotiations that took place at Volkswagen of America we finally have good news - the Golf R is coming to America.
Volkswagen of America announced that it will offer the 256hp, all-wheel-drive Golf R in both two-door *and* four-door (yeah!) configurations arriving in dealers in January 2012. A six-speed manual transmission will be the only transmission offered in our market. The 2-door and 4-door are offered in "base" well equipped and . All cars will have Climatronic and leather seating standard. The seats will be the top sport seats from the GTI with "R" logos embroidered on the headrests. The higher trim level will offer RNS-315 navigation, 300 watt Dynaudio sound system, a sunroof and Kessy keyless start.
- Pricing of the well-equipped base two-door model starts at $33,990 and the base four-door starts at $34,590
- Sunroof and Navigation models have MSRPs of $35,490 (two-door) and $36,090 (four-door)
Colors for the U.S. include:
- Rising Blue
- Candy White
- Carbon Steel
- Gray
- Black
- Tornado Red
It sounds like the base 4-door models will be a bit rarer so if you are interested in that particular model, contact your dealer early and get your order in. The original VWoA press release was confusing on this point as it seemed to indicate that base 4-door didn't exist. It *does* exist and you may need to prod your dealer to get one.
This has been a very long project that a few key people at Volkswagen of America and Germany worked hard to make happen. For the first time the Golf R will be available in both 2-door and 4-door variations in our market. Certifying two different transmissions would have been two costly and drove the price up further, so the decision was made to stick with the six-speed manual. Colors will be announced later with pricing. Until then, Volkswagen of Germany is tooling things up to prepare for production next year and we'll wait patiently (yeah right) till we hear more.
And there was much rejoycing...

Good to see a forum now. I guess not having the seats and LEDs aren't too bad. You can alway buy and install them yourself. Just bring the R over! Patiently waiting...

While you're being productive, can you now write a script to convert "R20" to just plain old "R" every time somebody uses that term?![]()

The current rumors point to both 2-door and 4-door models with either six-speed manual or six-speed DSG being available. The high-end Recaro shell-type seats and LED tail lamps will probably not make it over as they would both require significant investments to make them comply with our federal regulations (seat occupancy detects for the seats and DOT approval for the lights). VWoA would like to price it close to the price of the outgoing Golf V R32 model, but we'll have to wait and see on final pricing.
So far things look good. However a final green light hasn't been given yet and until that happens don't get too excited yet.

I really want to see those cloth seats (two tone white/black) as an order option... I'm sick of leather, plus cloth holds up better

Well, the forum is justified because the car is for sale elsewhere in the world, and there are plenty of members from other countries....kinda like the New Scirocco forum, the Lupo forum, and the Polo forum. Doesn't mean I am not 99.9% sure the car will be here, and have been for months.....just sayin' is all....

I second wanting the Kylami cloth seats. Thanks for setting this up.
I think I'm in the super minority as I want a 2Dr Rising Blue Metallic DSG car. I've got a 3yo who will be 4 by the time the R should get here and she has no problem climbing into the back of the GTI now. I'll be getting the LED tails (inspectors here are so focused on making sure the OBD light is off they miss obvious stuff like corded tires and non-DOT (as long as they don't look like pep boys specials) lights.
Here's hoping we hear the good news soon!
