Sorry for bringing back this old thread...
This whole '83 wolfsburg thing annoys me soo much! lol.
technically my '83 is a wolfsburg edition, and although repainted mars red, it started out as a silver color. Leather seats, tarantula wheels, 1.8 JH engine (original 1.8 seized), and everything else that fits the description. I believe it was made in summer or so of '83, i just know that it's a month older than my '84, which also has leather seats but oddly enough isn't a wolfsburg edition.
But, when i am not on the internet and talking to real people in real life (like some Canadian dude who was the original owner of his ,now only about 40k miles clocked, Mars Red '83 car with a 1.8 and leather seats) tell me the whole Wolfsburg thing was just a scam and that all of these options could be ordered regardless. In fact he went so far as to tell me that every single american '83 scirocco had the 1.8.
Just about every '83 i've ever seen has leather seats, and the owners all tell me the same thing!Isn't there some kind of way to look at the VIN and know for a fact if a car is a wolfsburg edition or not?
EDIT:
it also had that small trim that is shown on this pic. All this time i thought it was an aftermarket trim! I JUST took it off with a paint scraper yesturday!

Well i just took a look at my paint code just in case...
The paper in the trunk is a bit hard to read, but you can deffinitely make out L-7Y. I intend to show the pic once i can get it up... But after looking at some rocco paint codes for silver, i figured out that it's either Flash Silver (LP7Y) or Zermatt (LY7Y). It reaaallly looks like it could either be a P or a Y, though now that i look at it... looks more like a Y.
The manufacture date is on 6/83 like most of these seem to be, and as someone suggested, it could very well be that they threw on Flash Silver paint. I do know it has all the options a wolfsburg does, and it lists the engine code as a JH (1.8) Carfax would argue otherwise however...
It lists the car as having a 1.7L engine if i remember right, and it's first thing that was recorded was in '88 when it got shipped from Hawaii to Seattle by it's original owners *side notestill has the insurance sticker on the back from 1988 and it's a couple layers thick. Also i believe it had papers claiming sale in Honalulu,(The same place as my '84!)
*
I forgot who owned a Cali Special edition, but that'd be cool to see that trunk sticker.Either way this would be interesting cause one way we can prove that late '83's could come in flash silver, or that zermatt silver wasn't limited to the Cali Special version.
PS: Are we being Scirocco nerdy enough?!![]()

Well that myth is "Busted!"
my sticker
compared to an actual California Edition
Explanation: Model Code: R44 and Paint Code: LY7Y on the same sticker. Proof that not only my car is a Wolfsburg, but that the California Edition in fact wasn't the only trim model to come in Zermat Silver (California Edition's Model Code was S44).

Oh and there's a few ways to tell if the car's a WolfsBurg: Paint, Engine code, Tranny code, leather seats, I keep hearing about sway bars but i don't know what they would look like. I only have a "swaybar" in the back of the car, and that's part of the "independent suspension." Would really like to see a pic of said sways....
But it's like I say, pretty much every '83 I see is a wolfsburg. Friend just took a pic of an '83 the other day randomly and like i predicted.... ANOTHER wolfsburg editionAnd all 4 people i've talked to who had an '83 scirocco before had them in red, and they all had the 1.8 stock.... This is just my point of view though.

I had an '83, I think it was a wolfsburg but I'm not sure. It was chocolate; dark brown with clearcoat, the clearcoat pretty much all came off eventually. It had the 1.8 and a close ratio 5 speed, sway bars front and rear, single wiper of course, full leather interior, AC that didn't work by the time I bought it (109k miles). Sunroof, power heated mirrors but manual windows. It ran great up to 342k miles until I got hit hard in the rear. I still have a few parts from that car, some are on my '88 16v. My friend had one pretty much identical.

Huh, brown wasn't one of their listed colors for the wolfsburg edition, but this comes to me with no surprise...
I bet it was sold from the dealership as a wolfy :p

Yeah I know, I've been all over that site. Just suggesting that 83 wolfsburg editions aren't always as rare and special as they are made out to be :/ I think in this case sales of the vw scirocco were more important than wether or not the car was a genuine wolfsburg edition.
It seems that it's the reason why they introduced it in the first place was for sales, but with no significant badging, vin code, or anything like that, it seems to make them fairly common.
I have a hunch that late 83 cars could come with the 1.8, and maybe leather seats as well, by then the only difference between the wolfsburg edition would be color, but if it meant an extra sale I dont doubt a dealer would tag the car as a special edition.

I an pretty sure this picture is of an 84. Rubber trim and the fact it had a badge tells me this. The rubber trim used in 83 was placed higher up and it was thinner. What is the date of manufacture?

Hello I see the bump.
I just spent the week end putting mine back together.
I was hoeing to fix it up with some paint.
I bought a 76 and had to chose between the 82 and the wolfie. The wolfie won hands down.
I can believe I found a 76 I am so in heaven.

oooh, another zermatt silver '83 wolfie!
This is interesting, this car appears to have the newer rubber trim on it, and it also doesn't have a wolfsburg badge. I wonder what was up with the thinner trim that my car and some other '83's had. Mine was built a couple months after this car was as well.
I've also recently seen this (supposedly and aged zermatt silver) at WaterWerks this year
it's an '83, supposedly a wolfsburg. It had the newer trim. According to the kid who owned it, it used to have a wolfsburg badge as well and that's the way it came from the factory, but i highly doubt this, hardly anything on the car was original, and the kid was like the 5th owner or something.it DID have the leather seats however. What was left of them...

Hey guys, I figured I'd pipe in here... Ive got a zermatt silver 1983 Wolfsburg Scirocco... Dated on the tag 3/83 vin'd 020794. Looking through this thread, is this now the earliest one we have found so far?
It has front and rear factory sway bars, leather interior, and the wolfsburg badging on the b-pillars. I cant really comment on the engine and tranny combo in it, as it has a 1.9 TD engine and custom geared 020 swapped into it... Not a finished swap but its in there and most of the gasser stuff has been cut out.
I'll grab some pictures of it in the next couple days and see if I can find the build tag under the rear carpet.

Note he said TD, not TDI. Drew's been running a 1.9 TD for awhile, but I suspect he'll be the first one to finish a TDI swap.

answer; you can't.
Wolfsburg and other 'editions' were not special and add ZERO to the value or rarity of the car.
For those of us who where driving Scirocco's at the time, we know and realize that the Wolfsburg was a way for VW marketing to get rid of a bunch of old sciroccos at the end of their life. Got a bunch of 83's sitting around slap some badges on 'em, make them SEEM special.
It was a marketing ploy to make the car appear 'fresh' and get them off the lot.
They're about as special as a Maverick with racing stripes.
There were NO performance up-grades...just trim and a couple of smarmy badges.
VW was very successful in fooling the public to this day.
There are hundreds of 'wolfsburg' cars out there with badges gotten from a junkyard.![]()
