Thread: VIN Number Decoder...find out where yours was built

    1. 08-19-2002 06:42 AM #1
if you are interested to know where your VW was built, try this decoder:

Its certainly flawed (you seem to get 'VW Camper' as your trim spec every time!) But its quite interesting.

      (Flawed) VIN Decoder

For the simpler method, use this sheet below and look at the eleventh letter in your VIN- thats the factory code, found below. On http://www.uk-mkivs.net we have found nearly all our cars were built in Wolfsburg- I am assuming most NA cars will be Brazillian or Mexican? Post your results!

      Mexico...
What's the dfference between "Manufactured in" and "Manufacturing Plan"
Bored, I just switch the first digit from "3" to "2" and it gave me :
      Manufactured in: Canada
      Manufacturing plant: Mexico

      Puzzling isn't it

      Cheers,
      Matt

Not really. You changed the digit to give a non existent VIN, of course it spouted garbage...

As I said, its a flawed translator (checked what its saying for trim level?) but its of minor interest I prefer the code sheet for finding out where it was built- thats the only interesting part anyway really

As a note, over here everyone who has tried it has come up with Wolfsburg, no matter what the spec- odd...

Thats weird. I was under the assumption that the first digit in the VIN number designates which country the car was manufactured. My 2000 1.8T has the letter "W" first, which designates it was manufactured in Germany, which is true. My 92 SLC Corrado had a "W" also and it was manufactured in Germany as well. However, my 92 GTI had a first digit of "3", which means it was made in Mexico, and it was. My brothers 98 2.0 GTI also has the digit "3" first, and it was made in Mexico. If you go to the VIN decoder and only put the first digit in, it will tell you where the car was made.

In North America, newer model Golfs/Golf GTIs are built in Brazil. Jettas and New Beetles are built in Mexico. Some older model MKIVs were made in Germany. Passats are made in Germany. Jetta Wagons are also made in Germany.

And just to make sure this is clear to everybody, it doesn't matter where your car was manufactured as far as quality is concerned.

The first digit is actually the country of the manufacturer. The VW's that come out of Europe, regardless of what country they were actually assembled in, usually start with a 'W' since VW of Germany owns the factories. For example, a US market '97 Passat could be made in either Germany or Belgium, but either way the VIN starts with a 'W'. VW of Mexico is the company that owns the Puebla factory, so VINs from that factory start with a '3'.

FWIW, Mini is owned by BMW, so even though the cars are made in Oxford, England, Mini VINs start with a 'W'. Apparently there is no 'Mini Corporation' in England, but if there was the VINs would start with an 'S' (like a Jaguar or a Triumph motorcycle).

My "Wolfsburg Edition" Jetta VIN starts with 3 and the eleventh letter is an M. So much for Wolfsburg Edition. Heh.

Funny. I can just read "Product of BRAZIL" off of the sticker on the jamb of my driver's side door, and save myself all of that painful clicking and typing.

      Cuz I'm cool like dat.

That's interesting, my car is a 4-door base sedan with a high power diesel motor. Very interesting since my car is a 2-door GTI with a VR6 under the hood!! The translator did however correctly identify my car as being built in Brazil, which I already knew.
