at home painting...

lets say i wanted to pick up an inexpensive spray gun and learn how to spray. what would i get? anyone wanna link me to something id be able to find at sears or something... what about compressor size? does that matter? i have access to a small 4gallon 125psi tank.

devilbiss finishline is a great gun for starting. and its not a cheap gun that will fail on you as you progress. id recommend the 1.3 tip. its perfect for base/clear. and you can still get primer out of it if you need to, just not efficiently. but you can always buy a larger needle and air cap and swap out between the 2. and the compressor needs to supply 13cfm for this gun @23psi inlet.

just buy a harbor freight gun to start off... jmo. Or buy an iwata, if you dont like painting, just give it to me

But really, you can get a good finish with almost any gun, just a little more wetsanding involved

This. You can get it with 1.8, 1.5, 1.3 tips and regulator for about $250~ I use it for a prime gun with no complaints. It will do just fine with base/clear to start out with. MUCH better than some $50 piece of garbage.

Any conventional gun, (most are Binks 7 copies) can be sprayed
with lower PSI than recommended and use around 4 CFM and still
get a nice finish.
I used one for years with a 3/4 HP compressor.

I painted my car with the finishline gun. I agree for the price and all the tips and needles it is a crazy good deal.

Painted great I had NO problems at all. Primer, high build, base, clear you name it.

i've used an iwata which is great, a few other cheap ones, 3m(yes 3m make s gun that works fairly well) and tcp globabl gun.

Tcpglobal kit is cheap and works great for starting only needs 5-7 cfm. I would say try this. Once you get the hang of it and want to continue get an iwata and use the tcp global as a primer

I second the Harbor Freight gun. Theirs one you can get for 10$ with coupon. I bought two. Didnt know what i was doing at first, so i killed the first one( didn't clean it enough, got clogged). Second one i still have and so far have painted a truck and my car. I used Rustoleum paint from home depot to learn.

Truck cost less then 30$ including paint and gun. Excuse ridiculous paint job, my buddy wanted to have fun with his beater.



I was able to run it on a 5gallon, 150psi and less then 3 SCFM compressor.

Well is the 4 gallons are enough? I am afraid because I used 4 gallon when I paint at my home and the quantity was same that you mention above...But I couldn't got nice experience....

Once the tank is drawn down the compressor has to be big
enough to keep up with the gun.
Even if it can keep up, if it's marginal and runs most of the time,
you'll have to fight moisture problems from the hot air it
will be making.
HVLP's take a lot of CFM, if you have a smaller compressor,
a conventional gun makes more sense.
Astro has a conventional for under $50.00 and it sprays real good.
I used one for years before going HVLP.

I've never seen a small tank with 10-15CFM..

I've seen a smaller gas compressor with 11 CFM.. but they are kind of tied to each other. unless you make your own with a small tank and a big HP/Cylynder setup


I've had SATA, IWATA, SHARPE, DEVILBISS, HARBOR FREIGHT; I would like to use Eastwood's gun that looks interesting. I think the main thing is on any of the guns they have to be clean, you have to have them set properly, and move quickly. Thts how you get the best results.

Basically paint gun is an easy way to make spray and paint the require area....It not only paints the area but it also increase the shining and originality to the car...

Any HVLP gun will need at least a 3 HP compressor, and even some
of those compressors are over rated and will struggle to keep up,
which means they'll run most of the time which gets them hot and
causes moisture problems for painting.
For just a single panel or two, they'll be fine, but for an all-over, maybe not.
I have a "true" 5HP with a 60 gal. tank and it's just adequate.
I wish it were bigger.
