a friend of mine tonight helped me file down some edges and pulled out a little bit of the dust cover. izhmash makes it too tight straight from the factory and i was babying it (forgetting that it can take it) by not using enough force to force it in. it definitely takes some time getting used to, so need to break it down and put back together repeatedly tonight until i get the hang of it

Yeah, it takes a bit to get used to it - the rifles Ive had are varying "tight" fits...but with a proper application of punching...it all works.

took it to the range yesterday, sights were only slightly canted and had to readjust after shooting left and low. first time shooting a .308 after a lifelong experience with .223, did not expect that, felt like a 12 gauge. overall, i like, now it sits in storage for three months until i come back : (

i have a feeling a lot of the canted sights happen either during shipping or handling. in either case fixing a canted sight is easy. all you need is a drift punch, mallet, and dental floss. it takes probably 5-10 minutes to fix and then you're good to go for the next hundred years or so.

^that's the plan, well, first i need to save up for a scope / scope mount.

If that uses a normal AK scope-mount (ie. side mount) and you choose to go that route, let me know. I have a spare K-Var built model laying around somewhere. I also have a TWS dogleg rail optic mount, but not sure if the .308 is different than a normal AK layout concerning the rear leaf site.

that tws rail mount looks pretty interesting from what i gathered from their website. on the saiga 308 the rear leaf sight is 100,200, and ends at 300 meters. it appears to be the same type of sight (ladder sight) as all the others.

the rifle that i have is a short barrel, so i'm not exactly going for crazy range here, and instead, focus mostly on magnification like a simple reflex sight. also, when i was at the range the other day, my front sight was completely blocking the target at 100 meters.

haha maybe i need to bring a target the size of a posterboard instead of on A4 sized paper

Yessir, the little cleaning kit (they actually vary from rifle to rifle sometimes) can be used for just about ANYTHING on your rifle.

I think its blown up due to forums. Two people can have a problem and thread is 10 pages long. After reading so much about it I thought my front sight was canted. The forums made me crazy. I finally took a lazer line out and got it all line up and everything was fine.

it's a real problem. i know a few guys (i the real world, not online) that had an issue with canted sights, not to mention 1000's of other in the fake world. mostly on wasr's and romak's built by cai monkeys.

it's not just forum hoopla.

It is an issue...its also something which is very easily fixed by any gunsmith. :-)

So lets get back on the topic of actual guns. For some reason I want to own every variant of AKs, but I have gotten fixated on the Polish Tantal. Anyone own one? I have done a ton of research on them and have quite a few magazines that have articles on them.

Ok so I got a WASR 10/63 and want to check for canted gas block but I'm really not sure what to look for or HOW to look for it.

Can someone explain to me how to go about looking for canted gas block?

A canted gas block won't really affect your rifle - as long as it works with the gas port in the barrel. Now if you're referring to canted sights --- easy, lay the rifle on a flat table, and you'll be able to see if the front sight post is canted to one side or the other. Some front sight posts use screws, some use pins...I am going to fix one of mine here shortly.

Also...I normally adhere to big-boy rules...if the front sight block if a little canted, but you can zero your irons...then who cares? As long as it works, and is solid...don't worry about it.

I've read a lot of things about how a canted gas block isn't good for the rifle. I googled "gas block" and figured out its the part that protrudes up between the upper hand guard and the front sites but I'm still a little perplexed about how to check to see if it's crooked. Maybe I'm making nothing into something but I'd like to be sure. I just don't know HOW to check.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly how to eyeball a gas block...but all of mine haven't been an issue.
