i apoligize for asking so many ?'s, im new with the efi stuff. i have ce1 from a 'rocco which had a wire that came from the eci to run the fuel pump. i have this hitched up to the wire from the aba, and the pump will run once the car is started. is what u just wrote about the rabbit harness or the aba? id like to make this prime like the aba did in the a3. thanks for your help
#600
what I wrote is for a CIS based rabbit, you are saying that you had a wire going from the jetronic ecu in your rocco, and you hooked that to the yellow and blue stripe from the aba harness? Ill have to look at the rocco harness.. what year and engine did your rocco have?

my harness is from i think an 87 16v and it ran fine.im sure it cycled when you first turned the key to prime it but i cant think of anybody running cis to confirm that.the wire from the ce1 harness is d13.it is red/yellow.i have it conected to g1/3 on the ce2 harness.it is yellow/blue.it seems like a relay that runs for a few seconds kind of like a glow plug relay would work.i may have cut something out thinking i didnt need it.but im not sure.i can hook it up once i know what it is im missing i just dont know what it is.

I have a few questions about the "piggyback" method. So what I am understanding here is that the CE2 harness, ecu, and fuse box gets tapped into the factory fuse box. All engine monitoring would be CE2 connectors but you would reuse some of the factory sensors? As far as fuel pump wiring would you tap into factory wiring or run new wires? With CIS do you do that for both main and transfer pumps? What about the Jket Ecu and wiring? Does it stay in the car hooked up or can all the factory engine wiring be taken out? I am really considering this swap in my $500 Cabriolet. Thanks for any help or comments.![]()
#604
the ce2 fuse box doesn't get tapped into the factory fuse box. you are simply tapping into one wire off the ignition switch, wiring that goes back to the fuel pump(s), and wiring for the warning lights/temp sensor on the cluster (depending on which cluster you're using).
you do not need to reuse any of your old motor sensors. all sensors and clusters work just fine, regardless of if you retain your MK1 cluster or go with a MK3 one.
you can tap into your fuel pump wiring. however later cabriolets used 2 pumps so you'd need to join both power and ground wires for both pumps to the single power and ground wires out of the ce2 box (see first post for plug and wire location on ce2 box).
you can totally remove your factory engine wiring harness. but keep in mind that when you do you'd have to feed directly into your mk1 cluster wiring harness for the sensors/warning lights to work correctly.

I was a little confused there. I do have two pumps on my car. I will be using the factory mk1 cluster. I have more of a understanding how this all works now. Thank you much.

yup thats a coolant line. the small line from the bottle to the head I just tossed the bottle used an early radiator made a fitting and looped it,still flows the same just without the bottle![]()

I capped mine off completely, but had to get creative with capping the port on that coolant flange.
#609
wht you dont see in the pic is the aluminum plug at the flange thats drilled and tapped for the barbed fitting...I did it this way to keep coolant flowing the way VW intended

Just wanted to post up since I have fixed my cold start rough idle issue that would bog the rpm guage when I stepped on the gas then surge or stall ( depended on how it felt ), which was the heated o2 sensor relay btw. I have now come across the 5k or 5.5k rev cut off, so not sure if the 02 relay has anything to do with it itself or If the ecu was getting mixed signals and went into a rich limp mode that ignored the cutoff. I guess my options are to get a chip burned to ignore that needed vss signal or iirc there was a wiring trick to to loop the rpm signal wire from the ecu ( grn-blk) to the vss signal wire?

I'm the contributor of the VSS/RPM loop 'trick' (which I got from Dubgray1.8T's thread years ago). It works on my car, but it could be something that functions on a case-by-case basis, since even the VSS cutout seems to come and go. If it's OBD1, it's super easy to code out the limiter (see sig, and PM for info if you want a summary). In fact it's not really coding it out, it's simply raising it to a speed that is impossible to hit, so it never cuts.

Ok B4S I will, I have seen your link and signed up sun...started to read about it but if you could get me to the parts I need to know I would be greatfulIll PM you with what im looking todo.

No idea, I've only done it on OBD1. IIRC there was also an OBD2 fix posted that got added to the first post.

Got my ABA swap almost complete started up First time!! I am now just tying up loose ends and working on getting the stock cluster to operate.
This is where my snag is because all the guidance given in this thread lists taking the signals from the U-plugs in the ce2 fuse box and splicing into the C plug in the MKI fuse box. I have an 84 westy gti and my fuse box does not have a C plug. I would like to tap into the 18 pin connector for the cluster but I cant seem to find any info on a pin out of the connector.
If anyone can point out which wires I need to splice for temp, oil light, and tach I would greatly appreciate it!

ok, first up...what's up with the V belt?did you not get the lovely poly belt setup with your motor swap?
and i'm going off memory here...
18 coolant temp
16 oil pressure
11 alt signal wire
can't remember what the tach is.
all are listed in the bentley for your mk1 however![]()

Where is the 18 pin plug at?
The tensioner was broke on the donor engine seeing how it was free I improvised and I already had a toywagen pulley from when I had the aba/jh setup so it works. If I run across another alternator bracket for cheap I will swap em out but for now this works just fine.
Plus I have less than $200 in this whole swap OBDI block o mile freshly rebuilt head with OBDII management adjustable cam gear and 262 cam.

When it comes to running the wiring, how did you run it to exit the cabin? After I get my input shaft seal in my trans I can get the motor/trans in the car and wire it up. Any suggestions so I can prepare myself for the next step. Thanks![]()
