Yianni, did you end up buying an SSD in honkers? I'm speccing a new system to build up after many years of laptops and have decided to go with an Intel X25-M 80GB SSD, bout $400. Anyone else bought one yet?

didn't get one in HK as the currency dropped by $1 when i was there - so am looking around now that it's back up.
    Drives i'm considering: 120gb OCZ Vertex Turbo and 160GB Intel X25M Gen2
around the $400 - $500 price point for the OCZ and about $50 more for the Intel (on a good day, on a good ebay deal from the states

anyone have one of those US mail forwarding services i can borrow?

wonder if we can change the thread title to read OTPC for the PC thread and OTMAC for the mac thread - so it's easier to identify in the email subject...

    it's been done before
also the response would've been the same either way - Off topic, and vulgar

So, this new lap top of mine is terrific. Love it to bits. But for some reason, it tends to seize once every day or two... the clock stops, the key-pad stops and even <ctrl, alt, delete> won't work.

This is a real concern because I prepare my cross examination on my laptop in court. If it seizes half through a witness, I will be right royally fkd.

I've done a check and repair disk and defraged etc. Is there anything I can do to try to stop it from happening?

As a fall back, what is the process for tracking down the cause? Is it likely to throw an error before seizing?

If I can't fix it, I will need to take the computer back and return it. So, I want to try everything before I give up on it.

    TIA.

I have issues with Window 7 shutting down my browser etc. Not quite as dramatic as yours, but annoying just the same.

Matt, this is a new laptop and your description sounds like a hardware fault. If it's not working 100% now, it never will. Take it back and get it swapped for new hardware. If the problem continues, get your money back and try another brand - I hear there are fruit brands available that are the biz.

Same. In fact I haven't rebooted my PC since I installed windows 7 on it. No idea when that was either - a month or so ago?

Definitely sounds like a hardware issue. Take it back. Though it may be hard to convince them to do a swap out if you can't replicate the hanging issue

hhmmm give me one of these please, Asus EEEkeyboard.

    http://www.veoh.com/browse/vid...TNrCK

It keeps getting delayed. Wireless HDMI, will come with 16GB or 32GB SSD, 1.6 Atom, 1gb DDR2. Not sure that the 1.6 will handle HD video over the WHDMI? If works well it would make an awesome HTPC.

i have the eeepc 1005pe - N450 atom 1.66 processor, 1 gb ram, blah blah...
long story short - fully buffered and loaded videos over youtube stutter...
avi's etc are ok, but that's at divx ****ty quality. definitely no where near HD quality, and they sometimes stutter.
i'm very doubtful this will work well.

Just ordered all my new geek parts. Core i7, Asus P7P55D-E-PRO, 4GB memory, 80GB Intel X25-M SSD, Pioneer DVD burner & a Pioneer Blu-ray burner, Radeon HD5770 1GB GFX and Lian-li PC-7FN with 650W Corsair Micro. Will buy a second 24" once I decide on one.

I've purchased a Win7 Pro DVD. I've been trying to avoid 7 but it has TRIM support for SSD's so I have no choice.

So a SSD will be faster, but will 80gb be big enough? Mike's porn collection is about 500gb.

Keep 80gb for most used pron and keep the rest on a separate hard drive.

the theory behind SSDs is you put your OS, and programs on the SSD and main used files - i.e. email etc if you wish.. then carry around a little USB powered HDD with 500gb or so on it

The idea is you only put the OS and stuff you want to run faster ie appz and gamez on the SSD..

Bulk storage of stuff you arent actually working on/using but just viewing now and again like said pron can be stuck on another cheaper/standurt/larger hdd be it internal, external, on your home network, over the innertubes whatever.

    What these g33ks said

    I have a 2TB NAS and a 1TB drive which I'll remove from it's USB case.

What I'm not sure on is running my Lightroom catalogue. If I run my catalogue from the SSD but the photos are on the slow HDD will it be all that quick? I thought bout keeping a few sets of photos on the SSD for editing and then move them to a catalogue on the HDD when I'm happy with them.

Doesn't the OS cache the files in memory while you're editing them?

OS itself doesn't cache any files.

Lightroom however may cache last accessed pointers within the index file.

Matt an SSD like this 80GB Intel will read about 150-170MB/s faster then a mechanical HDD. To give you an idea, Windows should load in about 10 seconds.
