Yeah I agree. One argument against the Windows platform has always been it's lack of fart apps and nowhere to download tv shows for 5 bucks a pop.

Assuming HP produced that sheet (?) the reason why HP will be a fail is that they are looking for competitve edge in having a faster processor and a widget reverse flange spocket valve. While Apple use rich content and applications availability and the underlying technology is largely off the agenda.
iPad Certified.

I see the boy-God Jobs has said that on average, new iPad owners d/l 3 fart apps and 1 pron book in the first 12hrs of ownership

I fail to see what's not to like. It'll cost the same be faster, better, more featured, run every app natively you want in Windows with multiple touch or stylus, has a proper operating system and it'll run iTunes too for all your 'rich content' if you're a mental defective![]()

Agreed. iPad is surely for pure mac fanbois, anyone who actually wants to get some work done and not reverse engineer the OS just to install their favourite app, the Slate SHOULD win this battle. But Apple's marketing machine will go into overdrive and they'll sell twice as many as the slates

slate will win imho...
Open OS = businesses can integrate it without any fuss.

It really has nothing to do with the tech spec; the future of tablets is locked into content. HP has no content nor does it have distribution vehicle.And...er...Yianni...are you calling Win7 an Open OS?

sorry no, brain fart - was in the middle of something else.
What i meant was any company with custom software can use the HP slate.
I was talking w/ a surveyor the other day, and he mentioned the iPad and how it was excellent, and he couldn't wait to install his surveyor software on it and use it on site, and with clients etc... i then told him it'd be only able to use iphone style apps. he then said it was ****.
I then told him that HP should have the slate out mid year, and it had windows 7 - he is now a HP slate fanboi. My point being Apple in all their wisdom limits the ipad for apps (great thing for noobs) but businesses etc? if they want to use an app, they have to post it to the app store for the world to see... that's if apple even approves it. HP Slate will be the on road professionals slate of choice.

I reckon the content line is utter bullsh*t. You're neck deep in apple bs if you cling to that as q hope. iTunes is iTunes, u can use it on a PC. What's the ipad got a pc doesn't? Nothing.
#116
App store content is crap - i want a program to do xyz, i have to develop that for the ipad, then submit it to apple, then they'll say it's not good enough because it's not useful for the masses, it gets knocked back.ipad does have 10hours battery life tho.... and apparently the overheat issues to go with those massive battery packs.

If the HP Slate (or any other slate, there have been a few) was going to take off, don't you think it would have by now?I can't really see the point of the iPad, but whatever market they are drilling with it isn't the same as the slate.
What I'm trying to say is that maybe Apple is onto something, and maybe they aren't - time will tell. On the other hand we know HP still isn't onto anything.

no big players have released a slate/tablet as yet...
ipad has it's market - HP Slate has its market...
there'll be two type of tablet/slate markets.1. is the ipad one - which will eventually include OS's such as Google OS, Android, linux revisions, and ors (thejoojoo.com)
2. full on OS capabilites, like the HP Slate will have.ipad will KILL the competitors in 1. market. and everyone else will continue to fight in 2. - except apple. they'll be content with 90% dominance in 1.

Yeah the content thing is complete nonsense. I can view pdf's, I can download audiobooks, I can browse NY Times, I can watch TV shows AND I can play flash videos without needing a special player

Win7 is a hell of a lot more open than iPhone OS.
However I don't even think I'll buy a tablet of any brand. Don't think they'll do anything really special that my netbook doesn't do.

and the whole tablet thing, yes MS has been pimping the sh*t outa tablets for over a decade, but its just now that all the factors have combined to make them of a good enough quality/ speed spec and price to actually be useful/portable enough and with the intertubes and the network comming along nicely theres stuff you can actually do with them now too that didnt exist just a few years ago.

That's only because you have prehensile thumbs and have consistently used a keyboard with more characters than a calculatorI'm talking about people who usually get their documents handed to them in clear folios by rather fetching secretaries who also type their emails. These are COIs who barely cope with mobile phones, and whose tech support guys lock everything down to avoid data spills.
A locked down tablet like the iPad will be inhaled in that environment.
So, of course, Paul, you can get content -- we, here, all can -- but the point I was making is that Apple has created a marketing and fulfilment channel that no-one else even touches. Do you have an iPod, or just any old MP3 player? I'm betting the former!
And, yes, the iPhone OS is not open (although it is quite "Open" when jail-broken) but I was making the pedantic point that Win7 continues Microsoft's tradition of barely meeting any of the criteria of the OSF/Open Group
And, finally, no -- the iPad is not a tablet computer -- we've had that discussion, agreed and all left the oval. It is a content platform, and that's why Jobs was happy, not about 300,000 or 600,000 sales over the weekend, but the fact that every sale resulted in average downloads of 3 apps and 2 books (or whatever). It's a great business model!!! I reckon the only other company who has a chance of touching this is Google.

I've got a 160GB iPod, I've maybe downloaded 50-60 songs from iTunes, the other 2500-3000 songs are mine. I will admit that the App store isn't so much a marketing marvel but it is the ducks guts when delivering content. However I can't tell you how many times I've gone looking for a fart app or wanted to drink a beer from my e71![]()

From within iTunes on a pc, can I download and purchase all the same content designed for the iPad?
#127
and a little more the ipad cant do..
but no ipad apps obviously but you obviously have a pc in your hand so u have access to billions of mame, dos, windows and flash games and considering most of the best apps/games are ports or rehashes of older pc games/apps it shouldnt have any problem handling them... be interesting if the aero widgets start taking off again as people find more uses for them on a tablet etc and touch oriented mame front end if it doesnt already exist would also be win.. and nobody telling you what you can and can't run.. i think its good times all round, and the hdmi out port and hdmi out thru the dock and 1080p output, its a just at the right point for price and features its a huge winner imho i'll be chasing one down for shiz.
#128
one thing that supremely grinds me, is the sensitivity of all touch devices - except the iphone (now ipad).
Compared tot he iphone/itouch/ipad, EVERY single device is shiizen...the second a device comes out with comparable touch sensitivity, i'll be all over it like a rash.

The fact that the phone I already carry around every day (with 46gb in it) needs one simple generic cable to be displayed at a sufficiently high resolution for media playback on a big screen is awesome.
This is functionality that the average punter hasn't even thought of, but when people see it, they love it! If Apple don't release a "TV dock" for the iPad in the coming months, they are off their game. This functionality is even more killer for tablets than it is for high end smartphones!

Can I use the usb port on a NAS to plug into my topfield so it can be used as additional storage? Am thinking of buying one and having it stored where my audio gear is and would like to have the topfield be able to save data to it and also like the Oppo to play mp3’s from it.

Does your topfield work with standard USB flash drives? The more and more I muck around with proprietary media devices, the easier it would be to build a small HTPC.
