We flipped the Recaro seat around, as Daniels 1 year birthday is just around the corner. He was pleased...
Then he was tired, so I put him in his crib for a nap. No commotion, no noise. Just passed out like this:

Books say one thing, you say another, dr.s say another. She would be so much happier on rides if she was facing frontwards.

Isn't it really by height/weight?

We were told two years old, period. Our daughter is above the 90th percentile for height and weight. Her legs are jammed against the back of the car's seat. Ped's answer? "Better broken legs than a broken neck". Which I agree with, but damn she is bigger than a lot of two year olds we meet!

Our son is average at 9 months and 20lbs, but his feet are almost touching the seat. The seat we have is Chicco Key Fit 30 (up to 30lbs). At this rate he won't fit in the seat when he hits 25lbs. We're going to have to look for a convertible seat in the next few months.Infants should ride rear-facing until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat’s manufacturer. At a minimum, children should ride rear-facing until they have reached at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. When children reach the highest weight or length allowed by the manufacturer of their infant-only seat, they should continue to ride rear-facing in a convertible seat.
Rear-facing car seats spread frontal crash forces over the whole area of a child's back, head and neck; they also prevent the head from snapping relative to the body in a frontal crash
Rear-facing carseats may not be quite as effective in a rear end crash, but severe frontal and frontal offset crashes are far more frequent and far more severe than severe rear end crashes.

Better broken legs than a broken neck....
I've heard this, but it doesn't really make much sense to me. The idea is the the forces of the crash are distributed across the seat, but this only makes sense in a front crash where you are decelerating.
If you are stopped and someone plows into you, the baby is going to move the other direction .... into the straps. In that case, forward facing would be the better option.
I guess the best option is to avoid crashes
Our seat goes up to 35 lbs, so our little guy is stuck facing to the rear for awhile, like it or not.
Edit: Sinistermind beat me to the description of crash forces.

The theory behind the rear facing seat, as told to me by some baby seat nazi, is that many accidents tend to be rear-enders. Where a rear facing seat will keep your kid's head in a controlled position, a forward facing seat would let the kids head dislocate from it's spine. After one (I love the magic numbers), the likelihood of the kid having enough muscles to control his head so it won't shear off from it's spine is better.
I **** you not, that's what the seat nazi told me. Makes sense, but that's a BIG accident.
