Isn't your favouraite country of Switzerland a land of 'renters' rather than buy?

The culture to 'buy' is far greater here in Aust.

Correct. Problem is that in Australia if you don't own then you're seen as a lesser being... that stigma needs to change.

Very True + the need for ahouse vs. an apartmetn too I guess. Can't throw too many stones since I love my house and yard.

By the time you've become a grown up, I dare say it will be on the way to changing.

I have lived in apartments since uni, and still do. Prefer it to a house to be honest. But apartments are only for those of us who earn $106k a year. But weirdly enough, if I am to move into a house permanently, it will have to be a city townhouse like what I have bought that is still being built, or an acre suburban house. I don't know why I have an obsession with acre lots.

I outsourced the mowing as soon as I bought the new house.

Just gardening but not too big a hassle - pocket money for the little tanks as they get a little older to do stuff.

This thread needs pics of old kitchen STAT. I'm about redo my kitchen for the second time, the current one was a trial flatpack one that barely lasted 2 years before the kids killed it bigtime.

Even in 'lesser' suburbs, a flat is ~$500k, which means $100k cash upfront. $100k!! Where the **** are people meant to find that kind of money unless you're dealing drugs?!

Work out how much your mortgage repayments are going to be - say $3.5k/month. You obviously need to be able to afford the repayments, so you should be able to save $2500/month while paying rent on somewhere to live. So it'll take you 40 months to save up your $100k, which is just over 3 years. But f*ck saving for the whole thing, just invest wisely your 2.5k/month, and you should be able to do it in 2.5 years.

Or just go for a 10% deposit, save slightly less & have your deposit in two years - then get hit with mortgage insurance, higher repayments, etc.

Saving for an apartment - you're doing it wrong...

(I took 2.5 years to get my deposit and was saving less than I should have, but had help at the end with a great return from an IPO - otherwise it would have been 3.5 years)

Convince your mama to remortgage her house so you can use the cash. The secret is not to tell her what the document says, just tell her it's a business thing and she just needs to sign for you. Head to your Porsche dealer the moment you get the cash. Done.

One of the things we would like to do is reuse our old kitchen vents and door handles. We should be right with the circular vents, although if anyone knows of any spares we would love to know about them, but what we do need help with is sourcing some cabinet handles as shown in the pic below.

We need at least four in the kicthen (we only have two), but if we could get more then we might be able to use them elsewhere (laundry, robes etc). So, if you have an old house with handles like this that you are about to rip apart (or know someone who does) then please raid the doors first!

Once they're cleaned up they should look a treat.

so is the new kitchen finished? before and after pix??

Not yet. The kitchen guys are booked in for August-September. Before and after will be a bit tricky. The current kitchen will turn into our dining room and our dining room will become the kitchen.

Sounds interesting - as an ex-Canberra resident (8 years worth!) and a lover of butterfly roof and anything 50's (I have a house build in 1958 myself...happy to share pix if you're interested) I'd love to see the whole project!

Found some similar in local bunnies but they have a chamfer or bevel on the edge of about 3mm, not sharp like your oldies and they're shiny silver, can take pics if you need.
They were about 5 bucks or so.

Have you still got that cool place in St. Ives Hugo? There are some cool ones around Wahroonga/St.Ives but you have to look hard.

Liam - your reno reminds me of that famous renovation book, "How to turn your lounge into a Garage"

Ok...well here's a few...the place still needs a little work and there have been some changes since these pictures were taken also.

this pic is from the real estate when we bought the place - but for some reason I dont have a pic of this angle of the living room with our stuff!

Master Bedroom now has wallpaper on the back wall above the bed...

and lastly...just to add a VW element to the post...gardens in this pic have been replaced mostly with lawn

Found a box of handles thru the bulletin board at Mrs Lima's work. Just waiting to make contact with the seller now.

In other news, still getting facked around by paperwork and the builder still can't start.

Haha, better take your stuff to Hugo's joint. It is his place that has the pool.

Ours is still just a random gathering of thoughts and ideas. Plus a few useless drafties/engineers/certifiers who couldn't meet a deadline if their life depended on it.

Hugo, your house is amazing, and beautifully fitted out too. Restecp.

Friends of ours are selling this place at the moment:

Probably not, as it turns out.

Seems the handles have already been sold (this morning). We'll see if we can snaffle a few spares from the buyer though.
