I saw those shots on your photostream, I love them. I totally understand your obsession for 1.4. I traded my 50mm f1.8 for this new one just because f1.8 wasnt enough for me!

I traded my 50mm f1.8 for this new one just because f1.8 wasnt enough for me! Thanks! It's funny how f/1.8 -> f/1.4 makes such a huge difference, huh? After a shoot this past weekend and being given a 24-70L to play with, I was pretty set on it... but now am back to "prime vision" thinking that a 135mm f/2L is my next lens. I have a mental block where anything above f/3.5 seems slooooow.

does a 1.4 lens allow you to still take pics at 1.8 or is it a fixed lens?
#6
Yup, adjustable just like any other lens. Except mine only goes up to f16.

1.4 is faster, which means it will let in more light than the 1.8. It will also give a shallower depth of field that will throw anything out of focus if your at 1.4. Fast lenses with an f-stop like will cost more but its well worth it.Edit: ^ beat me to it, thanks!

This is an amazing lens and is light years beyond the 1.8 II in build alone. I just got my 1.4 this past week so I don't have any good shots with it yet.

The build quality is definitely something to talk about - much meatier and solid feeling than the f/1.8. Now the f/1.2, I can't speak to... sadly.

ORLY? That's disturbing. Is there a history of that happening with others too? I had yet to hear about this issue until now.

Definitely! I bought mine for $400, and now I'm seeing them for $360-375, depending on where you look and new/used choices. I couldn't help myself at that "small" price bump.

this thread makes me want to buy the 50 1.4 even more than i already want it, but i'm going to wait and see how much the "new 50 1.2" that's apparently supposed to come out will cost.
