just looks like the focus is off. where did you place the AF point? On something like this one I'd place it on his face, which is what I'm guessing you did since it's the closest to being in focus. When shooting at such large apertures it's important to choose AF points yourself and not let the camera decide what it wants to focus on (which I think might be the issue?)

Here's one I did a week or two ago, 85mm f/1.4D wide open (she was keeping her eyes on a friend dressed as Santa )

Thank you for the advice...I understand what you mean and I let the AF point focus on his chest rather than his face.

went to see some christmas lights at a local garden. used a cmount cctv 25mm/1.4 lens with a gh2. pretty much all shot wide open at 1.4..maybe closer to ~1.8 on a couple
