yusuke has a 1.8T. so does Chris (you haven't met him yet). as for the A3, A4 VR6 fuel efficiency i don't see that an A4 would be much more efficient. maybe less drag but that would be about it. for the years you are looking at it is pretty much the same set up. honestly for the money you want to spend and since you really want something a little more efficient then i would look at the 1.8T. same gas milage as a 2.0L and has plenty of pep.

    lmao

I guess my only point is that the 1.8 feels like it needs to be modified from stock (which is good that it is cheap to do so), where the vr6 never felt that way in stock configuration to me. I really wasn't looking to do mods to my car either when I bought it, just the best bang for the buck when I bought it, and I ended up with the car I got (which had mods). If I hadn't found this VR6, I might have ended up in a WRX, just because my opinion of the stock 1.8T (after driving it) was poor and no one could find me a A4 VR6. The reality is that the A3 VR6 saved me about $10,000 in my particular car purchace. So I am biased I guess....

If you want the ultimate in performance and affordability, then neither the VR6 or the 1.8T are the engine you want. If you are interested, I can find the e-mail of the prior owner of my car who sold it to get a TDI. You laugh, but with as few or fewer mods than it takes to bump up the 1.8T, the TDI can become a torque monster. His A4 TDI probably has well over 350 lb ft of torque, and if he doesn't burn up his tires on launch, had no problem smokin me (and most of our 1.8,vr6, or 2.0 modified cars). He currently runs in the PCA track days and can easily beat Boxters. And then if he tones his driving down a little can get almost 50 mpg. Its only drawback is it doesn't sound as cool and you have to shift at 3000 rpm.

  3. 11-29-2003 03:47 PM #2033
I don't have any complaints about the 1.8t, but I've come to the conclusion that with as many miles I drive, I need to look into a TDI. I was looking to trade in on one, but since my car is just over 6 months old, and has just over 18k on it already, they seem to not want to give me too much for it

I've decided to wait things out and see how things are going when the MKV and the Audi A3's come about. If Audi brings us the 2.0TDI in the A3 quattro, and it isn't too expensive, that's what I'm looking at. Otherwise it would be an MKV 2.0TDI, hopefully with DSG. Ehh...guess I'm getting too old for the whole car scene thing...the whole MPG issue with the TDI is very appealing.

So...I will be having some 1.8T mods up for sale here shortly...I'm still debating on whether or not to try and trade my ECU with APR DPP for cash and a stock ECU yet...I guess if I get the right offer, I would though. Only 3 things I would get rid of are my Bentley Manual, VAG-COM, and my HIDs. Here's the things that are going to be up for sale:

    Injen Intake (Black)
    Samco Turbo Inlet Hose (Black)
    ECS N75 Valve
    42nd Design Smoked Bumper Markers
MHW Smoked Sidemarkers (2 different sets)
Possibly...just Possibly my W8 console *cough*JOHN*cough*, if I end up too lazy to put it back in
    R32 Brushed Aluminum Door Pulls
HKS Type 1 Turbo Timer (Black)
MWG Trigger Circuit Fix for Turbo Timer on A4 cars

If you're interested in anything, drop me an email or IM on here. None of this has been posted for sale in the classifieds yet.

it's all about the cash. 6cyl = higher insurance, and while it isn't bad it still gets slightly worse gas mileage. lastly on average they cost more. of course you can always find a good deal. good luck adam

maybe its just me but it seems like the resale value of all the newer VW's (MK3 on ) have dropped a way too large amount the last couple years.

at least between us and our discussions, it sounds like the 1.8T is what i'll look for. i have noticed that the A4's have quickly dropped into the price range of some of the A3 cars... pretty interesting.

the way i worded what is driving my decision to my mom:

i dont know what kind of car to look for, and A3 that has had some parts replaced recently and some of the bugs worked out, or an A4 that may have had recalls on the bugs but may have things about ready to wear out.

on a side note, i'm bringing my snowboard back to school, anyone else have one? i'm a tad bit rusty... ok really rusty.

i might be interested in some parts.

southwest managed to lose my luggage... and my brothers. best part? hartford wont claim responsibility, neither will chicago. so it "might" be in chicago, or hartford, or somewhere in the air between here and new orleans or pheonix. isnt that neat?

Greetings from Phoenix -- geez, I go away for a week and y'all start posting like crazy!

    1. Adam -- I'm flying out of Phoenix Tuesday afternoon about 4:00 Arizona time. If there's anything I can do around the airport there to help try to track down your luggage, leave me a voicemail on the cellphone (I'll PM you with the number).

    2. Adam again -- when I'm back in town, you're welcome to try out the feel of a bone-stock MkIV 1.8T. The MkIVs really do feel more refined and "baby-Audi-like," but you're giving up a lot of the feel that made VWs VWs. Hard to go wrong with either a clean MkIII or MkIV.

    3. As expensive as my vacation's gotten, I doubt I'd be in the market for any parts, but I'll consider it when I get back.

    Signing off for now....

really really. but its a 2.0l (i think i've decided against the vr6, since i dont want to make a million gas stops on drives to CT) so thats not a bad thing, but its also not the newest body style out there, and i've almost got my heart set on a golf. but this one sure is nice.

The VR isn't THAT bad on gas mileage........geez.......I make trips to SC and back quite a bit and have driven my GTI-VR6 (A3) and my fiances Cabrio and we still have to stop for gas once on the way there and back. Is a few dollars in gas really gonna break ya? If so, maybe you should be considering NOT getting a newer car. Sounds like you'll be walking a fine financial line if you do.......

not trying to start another round of "better engine", but almost all cars seem to end up with the 300 mile per tank number. Not sure why, (itsa conspiracy I tell you) but all of mine have, from the Honda del sol (no problem always 35 mpg minimum at 85 mph) to the '83 Bonniville 6 cyl (the tank - 0 to 60 in 35 seconds unknown mpg), to the VR6(no prob 30 mpg at posted speed limits - 65-70 mph).

I think you should drive some friends 1.8T's, VR6's and 2.0's and then decide how much you like each and then look at how much difference the gas and other expenses would be. Isn't it about how much fun it is to drive your car?

Really the insurance price difference is gonna hurt the pocketbook more than the mpg. Yes the VR6 should hurt the most on that cost.

And if mpg still seems that big to you, then get a TDI. All the same suspension and body parts go on them, and the engine is tunable as well. And it should have really low insurance. It really suprised me (might have to get one as a commuter/work car someday, after another sports car and I have money to do so).

    Good Luck

couldnt you use a t-valve to split the hose that funs to the rear wiper pump? i think i'd give that a try, it always bugs me to have something on my cars that dont work ... a/c in the jetta, disc changer and hazards in the bug

  23. 12-08-2003 07:19 PM #2053
yeah but i don't want, to squirt my rear window and headlights at the same time, i'm really not sure what i'm gonna do i plan to do some preliminary work over christmas so maybe i'll have a better idea then

GTiman1212....I might be able to let go of my washer pump and reservoir from my rocco. That might fix your problem.

i love it, its one of those cars i'll never want to part with. it came from down south, from what i'm told, in florida. it made its way to michigan for a bit of restoration, and ended up in north carolina where i found and bought it. i'm gonna try and bring it out here permanently over spring break. is there much to worry about with road salt out here?

It could be worse, but especially with an older (and from what I understand, somewhat rust-prone) car you intend to keep forever, I'd just keep it off the roads in winter -- which it sounds like you'd be doing anyway. Like John said, you shouldn't have salt issues driving it out here in March.

Also, the talk about Bugs made me think of this: My dad was talking the other day about how nostalgic he is for his old Bug. (He also had a Squareback when he and my mom started dating.) His nostalgia is so strong that the New Beetle convertibles really, really appeal to him.

Makes me wish I had the budget to get him a clean Bug softtop for Christmas or something -- I doubt he'd ever do it for himself!

So far it is fine but I need to take her off the road soon. I have a unimog for the real bad days. I might be picking up an '88 GLi this weekend for my daily non-snowy days. Let me know if you need any help with either car. I might have been able to do the wheel bearings back then but I don't know if the brother-in-law would let me borrow his bearing pulling tool.

My beetle was a California car. Never been restored. I have all the door panels and scrappers in the garage. I need to repair the little pin holes in the door and repaint the whole car. I need to put a new headliner and carpeting and it will be mint again. It is pretty close for a 37yr old car as it is. The engine runs great. I can cruise the highway at about 70-75mph. You should check some of the air-pumper groups around here. Bring her over. We need more old school dubs in Indiana.

a unimog? as in one of those huge mercedes trucks? thats really cool. this is it down in NC, before i brought it north. needs paint on the roof, and touch up paint all around, a bit of cylinder #3 work (stripped sparkplug hole, previous owner) and brakes.

the gaskets in this picture look red, but they're black. any pictures of your car out on the net?

If you need help with the brakes, I just did all 4 wheel cylinders and the master, replaced the front rubber too. It was easy except for the bleeding. I couldn't get it to bleed even with help so I took it to the guru and he used is little aircompressor bleeder tool. I wish I had my brother-in-law's tool box. I have yet to see anyone who has more tools than he. He could probably hilacoil your spark cylinder if you talk to me at the time you bring her down. Will you be driving her or carting her? Where in Carolina? I used to live there, hense the NCVWNUT
