lmaoI guess my only point is that the 1.8 feels like it needs to be modified from stock (which is good that it is cheap to do so), where the vr6 never felt that way in stock configuration to me. I really wasn't looking to do mods to my car either when I bought it, just the best bang for the buck when I bought it, and I ended up with the car I got (which had mods). If I hadn't found this VR6, I might have ended up in a WRX, just because my opinion of the stock 1.8T (after driving it) was poor and no one could find me a A4 VR6. The reality is that the A3 VR6 saved me about $10,000 in my particular car purchace. So I am biased I guess....
If you want the ultimate in performance and affordability, then neither the VR6 or the 1.8T are the engine you want. If you are interested, I can find the e-mail of the prior owner of my car who sold it to get a TDI. You laugh, but with as few or fewer mods than it takes to bump up the 1.8T, the TDI can become a torque monster. His A4 TDI probably has well over 350 lb ft of torque, and if he doesn't burn up his tires on launch, had no problem smokin me (and most of our 1.8,vr6, or 2.0 modified cars). He currently runs in the PCA track days and can easily beat Boxters. And then if he tones his driving down a little can get almost 50 mpg. Its only drawback is it doesn't sound as cool and you have to shift at 3000 rpm.
