Does anyone know whether there's a relay or replacement switch which would shut the running and tail lights off, after the ignition is shut off?

I'm surprised a car of the quality of the Sportwagen didn't ship with that feature to begin with!

What a great car - 20 hours driving over three days, with two adults and two very tall sons, Thule box on top, back full, no doubt a bit over the weight limit hauling all sorts of college stuff back home - we all fit comfortably and trooped on home, a few weeks ago.

    Averaging 38 mpg over 25,000 miles -

Purchase a "Auto" headlight switch, domestic or euro, makes no difference. Replace your original headlight switch, put the switch in the "Auto" position. When you start the car, the headlights and running lights come on. When you shut off the car, the headlights and running lights turn off. Put the headlight switch in the "Off" or "On" position and you retain stock functionality. No VagCom programming required. :super::clap::thumb:

Thanks -- I'd be looking for a switch that fit the existing opening and knob. That's probably not likely with an after-market switch, is it?

I guess I'm also wondering if the Jetta SEL or GLI has auto-off, or whether I could retrofit a switch from a Passat, etc.?

We have a few different OEM Automatic Headlight Switches available that can be found here on the website:

The swap is extremely straight forward, OEM fitment, so it really is just a matter of which style you like best and which features you would like.

It took me a while to get back to this; thanks for the previous responses.

I went to the ECS online chat to make sure I was ordering the correct switch, and got the following response:

"you can't just install the switch, its very complicated as there are many sensors and modules."

Is that true, or does the switch alone provide the auto-off headlight capability? I do not have fog lights, which seems to be one of the switch options. Also, if the switch alone will do the job, does installation require any special tools and does the swap-out require VAG-com reprogramming?

(My auto euro switch is on the way, hasn't arrived yet), no coding change is required for AUTO to work, it's a very easy swap. Pull out old switch, install new switch.

On AUTO setting, turn ignition on, headlights come on, turn ignition off, headlights turn off. The AUTO settings is designed for use with a light sensor, so that if it's sunny out the headlights don't automatically come on, but without the sensor it works as ON/OFF with ignition.

For what you want, you can buy any MK5 euro switch with AUTO setting (no rear fog, basic, or chrome), it won't matter to you. Buy the one you like best.

If you want full euro switch features, you can use the VCDS to disable DRL, and turn on Coming Home and Leaving Home options.

I have no idea what you are talking about...

A local here had an auto euroswitch so I installed it in my car temporarily and, even with it set to auto, the lighting stayed on even with the car off.

Also, in order to get the auto settings to work properly, you need a rain light sensor and control module, or you can buy the aftermarket setup which the harness plugs into and provides a separate light sensor that you mount on the dash.

Yep itll come out to around $800 for a new CECM, mirror with rain and light sensor (and auto dimming BTW) and switch not to mention the time to wire everything up. Unless someone can get a good deal on a CECM for you. But then your options open up with the Highline CECM installed. Fogs as DRL's turning lights etc.
Sometimes I think I should of just got the A3 and been done with it

Not sure if that kit requires a highline CECM or not...

Or, you can do it the quick and easy way...
