I should say I run 20w50 in the old VR's, our 3.2 gets 5w40 and so did my 2.8 24valve.

Gotcha Brandon, I'm pretty sure that this vr has just been rebuilt so I'd say 5w40 should be great

I'm currently running 10w40, but may have to try switching to 20w next spring

The previous owner of the 24v i just bought ran Castrol full synthetic 5w40....do you guys think that's alright? I'll need another oil change in 2000 miles, so I assume just run the same stuff! I don't hear any abnormal noises coming from the engine.

If the synthetics not finding leaks or burning up then you should be fine but dont be switching back and forth just pick one and stick with it. Personally i only run synthetic in the gti because its turbo anything else i run conventional unless it calls for other wise. Even my 500hp chevy i only run 10w40 castrol im going to put 10w40 in the jetta and hope for the best

In talking about VR oil weights I have always been a fan of using Castrol 15w-40 Diesel oil being that the VR was originally designed as a diesel motor!

eBay is fine. Just ravage his seller's rating and don't look back.

BBS rsII. What is your lug pattern?

Also, the eBay guy refunded my money in full and told me to keep the caps. If anyone needs 2.75" caps, let me know.

Put that linkage in yesterday and drove it around the neighborhood a little. Didnt want to go too far because it has a tail light and corner light out. Both fogs arent working either so its either a fuse or they are burnt. After driving it a little it quited down some but it still sounds like a diesel. I think the clutch needs bled or adjusted yet as well as it trys to stall out everytime you pull out and acts a little funny when shifting sometimes. Also checked the CEL and there was like 15 codes so i cleared them all before driving it after driving only two came back. One was p1420 for the SAI and the other was p0341 camshaft position sensor a circuit range performance bank 1. I assume thats why it has a slightly rough idle. I checked and made sure its plugged in so perhaps it needs replaced or a wires loose. Also after driving it, parking it and then getting alicia so she can drive it it lost power again so i got out barely even touched that plug and it got power and was fine again for the night so perhaps something is loose yet but i just see it as an anti theft device didnt drive it in to work today because i didnt change the oil yet.

Indeed. Not worried about the sai. Camshaft sensor could either be bad sensor or timing off a tooth. I havnt done timing on a vr so i guess i will need to research it and make sure the timings on before ordering a sensor. It seemed to pull well though as i got on it once and took it up to like 3500 in third. Definatly needs an exhaust or muffler though so i can have the vr sound. Now it just sounds like zacks 1.9l tdi

If anybodys got a spare sensor for a 97 that i can use to test it would be great i believe they are different between 97 down and 98 up.

Not every MkIV needs to be even this fast but when a car is so low it looks broken and has more money in the wheels (with huge rear wheels no less) than the car's KBB it just doesn't make sense.
