My cruise doesn't work in my 98. I know this is common from a quick google search.

I didn't get to watch it slowly die like it seems several people have. I bought it dead. What I'm wondering is there is a light in the cluster that says "cruise" or something when you switch in to "on" on the stalk. I don't mean actually setting a speed, but just powering the ability to set a speed with the on switch.

I get nothing in the cluster and I'm wondering if my cruise just wont set... or if the device itself isn't even getting power. Just not sure where to start troubleshooting this one.

      Thanks all.

My "Cruise" light does not work either. However, I can set the Cruise control and control the speed up and down via the stalk.

Same here... No cruise light on the instrument cluster, but my cruise control works fine.

There's no indicator at all on the B5. The B5.5 (2001.5 and up) has a green light to tell you the switch is on. It doesn't tell you if a speed is set, or anything else. Just that the switch is on.

my cruise doesnt work either. i wanna try to fix that soon. it would be nice to have even though i wouldnt use it that much. i like to have control of the pedal but every now and then on longer trips it would be nice to move my right leg around for a minute or two. i am going to replace the switch first and see if that fixes it. if that doesnt work i am not sure what to try next.

The Drive-By-Cable cars have a stand alone cruise control system consisting of the turn signal stalk controls, a control module that lives behind the glove box, vacuum vent switches on the brake and clutch pedals, a vacuum pump under the hood near the ABS pump, a vacuum diaphragm that moves the throttle plate.

The Drive-By-Wire cars have the turn signal stalk controls and the rest of the cruise control is incorporated into the DBW system and controlled by the ECM.

Here is some good info on the earlier DBC systems... http://www.passatworld.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=279901

I have an early B5 (not 5.5) and my light lights up on the tachometer next to the fog light indicator when I switch the stalk to the "ON" position.

I am in South Africa though.

Yes, the light is enabled on cars sold outside the United States. Users who have swapped in a european instrument cluster report the indicator working. I guess the Germans figured all the little lights would confuse us poor 'mericans.

Yeah. The strident "OMG, you're almost out of washer fluid!" warning makes me jump every time. I wonder how many people crash their cars, taking their eyes off the road to see if the chime is for "low washer fluid" or "engine being destroyed"?

You also have the DBW (or E-gas) throttle system. What year is your car and what engine code is your 1.8?
