    Thread: Door Lock Switch decals

    1. 07-11-2010 02:17 AM #1
Couldn't find a reference to this problem using search function...

The plastic facing/decals on the power door lock switches on my rear doors (2006 Passat) have blistered badly and are flaking off. I took to the dealer who said I would have to replace the switch assembly as they could not replace just the decals.

I was double checking that answer in this forum. Had the same problem with the front switches while the car was under warranty and the dealer fixed or replaced them several years ago, but I never asked what the dealer did to correct the problem.

Do other have a similar problem and is there an alternative to completely replacing the switch?

The ones on the rear doors are really bad right now, on my '06. Front, not as bad. How much is it to replace all of them when out of warranty? That's what I need to know!

The dealer service dept "person that calls the customer back but doesn't know squat about what they are talking about or know any details" gave me a price of $158 to replace the lock switch(es?)... but I don't know if that was for one or both sides as I was so floored by the need to replace the whole switch that I didn't think to ask!

Mine are so blistered that they are flaking off. I was thinking about scraping off the material and then maybe painting it matte black (which would cover the internal illumination light). Outside of that option, haven't come up with any others.

So does anyone have a DIY on how to replace the switch? Do you have to take the door panel completely apart to replace it?

Only my driver's door is bubbling so that's the only one I am looking to replace.

mine are totaly the clear base plastic color on my driver controls, the front passerner is getting really bad, and the rears are fine. again, i have an 06.

was this problem unique to 06's?

    9. 08-16-2010 09:52 AM #9
Yes this problem is unique to the 06 Passat. VW at first said it was your hand oils that made the covering bubble. Yeah sure, buttons and switches that will bubble and flake because of oil on your hands. Sometimes the dealer will replace under warranty. In all reality, it is just another poorly crafted part that the consumer is stuck with or has to pay to have them replace with better switches. My 06 is currently at the dealers and two bubbling buttons is on my list of issues to be looked at. I have 51k on the car. CPO warranty. I will let you know what happens.

Do the math. Say 1 million units sold. 1 million units return to have a $1.00 switch replaced. $1 million dollars out of their pocket. Normally a recall needs to be a safety related issue. Since crappy cheap interior materials are not safety related there will be no recall issued.

You need to order new door lock switches. I believe the part numbers are as follows (Double check...I could be wrong) :
      Left front - 3C0-962-125-B-REH
      Right front - 3C0-962-126-B-REH
      Left Rear - 3C0-962-135-B-REH
      Right rear - 3C0-962-136-B-REH
I plan to order these. I have already ordered replacements for the window switches and the mirror switch. Can anyone give any insight onto the procedure for removing the door card to get to the switch?

I think I may have a solution for this. I am going to take a picture and edit it in Photoshop. Find a place to print these off as stickers and then take the locks out trip them down put the stickers on and paint with Duplicolor paint and then peel the sticker off. THis should fix the cheap SOFT TUCH Paint VW and other GERMAN cars use.

ALso I am painting the door handles with Duplicolor paint after I strip them. Make the car look better and resolve the issue.

Will keep you guys posted when I find a shop that can make these as stickers.

My 06 Passat has the same issue. The back lock switches are completely peeled off and the front are on their way. The front door arm rests are also peeling very badly. Not good. This is really early in the life to be having these issues. I'm afraid of what will peel next
