I vehemently disagree. It only looks appropriate on vehicles that were campaigned in that livery. Seeing it on every POS imaginable has diluted it to the point that it's now become tacky. In thirty or forty years it will once again be cool, but again it will only on the cars that were originally campaigned that way until every douchbag with a checkbook takes their crap to the body shop and says 'Hey, how much will it cost me to offend history and peoples' sensibilities.'

I used to agree with you - VERY MUCH SO, and I certainly respect your opinion on many matters, You certainly have good taste in automobiles. I was very prudish and quite the stick in the mud about "tradition" (not saying that you feel the same way for my reasons, however), and the cars that should be "allowed" to wear the gulf colors. I was of the mind that only the vehicles that wore them in anger, or at most their street-driven counterparts, should be allowed to be those colors. Then I personally came to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter.
First of all, racing is a sport, and as such it is primarily meant as a contest and we love it for its entertainment value. I am reminded of baseball's "Potato Incident" here - there's a certain point at which you have to laud those who participate in the sport and realize that we are all meant to ENJOY it. While it is certainly serious business for those involved, those of us who spectate high-level racing can not do much other than appreciate, applaud, be enthusiastic, and in some opportunities attempt to honor our favorites.
To that end, I have come to the conclusion that painting a vehicle (or other objects, for that matter) in a manner that pays homage to your favorite racing livery isn't really all that different than wearing your favorite hockey team's jersey. (Go Wings.)
I saw people in Europe doing it all the time with Ferrari badges on their mundane everyday anonymobiles. They didn't think that putting a Ferrari badge on a Fiat made it one - they were displaying their enthusiasm for the (usually F1) team. I say that if you're enthusiastic enough to honor your favorite racing team on something as large and important as your car or your motorcycle - go for it. As with every fan honoring their favorite teams - there are varying levels of commitment.
Remember that auto racing is a sport, and as such it is meant to promote competition in good spirit. Rather than condemn, I choose to applaud fans who love their teams enough to flaunt their colors.

Gulf oil paint jobs - how do they work!?
Is there anyone in a related art/design/aesthetics field who can explain why this relatively simple combination of colors has been doing it right for 40+ years?

The colors are incredibly well-selected. The true litmus test for me is this:
- I absolutely HATE orange next to blue
- I absolutely HATE The NY Mets colors
- I absolutely HATE The NY Knicks colors
- I absolutely ADORE the Gulf Livery
Why? The saturation/boldness of the blue has been toned down drastically from your run-of-the-mill orange/blue scheme, not to mention that orange/blue are complimentary colors (across diagonally from each other) on the color wheel. Which psychologically can mean one of two things. 1. They look great together! A plus! 2. They make you feel almost nauseous to look at. So toning the blue down helps a lot with the somewhat buzzy loudness you get from two complimentary colors sitting next to each other.
I'm going to hazard a guess and use my oil painting experience and say that the original designers probably either dropped some blue into the orange, or orange into the toned-down blue in order to make them more harmonious and less combative. This is a little trick I learned a long time ago that fools our eyes and brains into thinking "yeah, these two work together"(even when, theoretically, the combo is supposed to be less appealing) Also, pale blue is an incredibly powerful color. If you notice, lately a lot of childrens/cosmetic/pottery barn-ish types of color schemes have shifted to a pale powder blue, brown, and white.
Combine all these elements of the color choices and saturation and add the fact that the Gulf livery is, for all intents and purposes, very very simple, and I think this is why it works so well.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation, I'm just a color nut.![]()

I love cars, but the problem is they are like schroedinger's hobby. They're always in a quantum superstate of being both awesome and a huge waste of time and money... until observation momentarily forces them into one state or another.

From my earliest experiene of the pale blue and orange (on a Tyco slot car) I've always thought it somewhat ugly and totally lame as a racing livery.
Today though it brings back good memories of childhood (racing in a cool basemment on a hot summer day) and actually makes me feel like painting something pale blue and orange. The rerfigerator, maybe.

What you get isn't always what you see.

There is no need to apologize. I was an art major in college and am now a large format printer and I agree completely. It works very well together. I've been seeing a lot of yellow and purple together lately and I absolutely hate it! A purple field with yellow papyrus or copperplate text on it would probably send me into a frenzy!![]()

Classic livery to be sure. The darker blue, as used by Andy Blackmore on the F1 was pretty solid as well, although there was significantly less orange than the 'traditional' version.
