'Good enough', or at least we hope so.

The rad fans are hooked up but not tested, and several parts are held together with zipties and hope.

Most annoyingly, I cannot get the oil pressure light to work, and cannot find the coolant gauge wiring either.

Coolant gauge is generally yellow/red. Oil pressure light uses a tach signal for the different ranges, and since you have a diesel cluster with gas signal, it thinks the engine is turning 4x what it really is, if it's working at all. Is it working? I don't remember if you connected it, or how the 1.8T delivers it's signal. Minor details though

Glad to hear it's running! Speedo dosen't work? Did you wire it up?

Nope, no tach. Hi and lo pressure oil don't work. The engine was from a Passat that I owned and drove, so it used to have decent oil pressure.. We'll just keep thinking that it does, and maybe put blue tape over the oil light.

CEL is always on too. It's like a christmas tree. I'll work on that later. Ha.

No speedo. It's connected. Don't know what's wrong. It's only in Km anyway, so meh. Our 'convoy' is the greenland polo, a 15ft budget truck filled with parts and a 1.05L right hand drive 1982 Polo. We ain't going to be setting any land speed records

The next post will either be joyous, or a call for help from TCLers who are closest to where we broke down*.

Pull all the lights out They're only LEDs in sockets in the cluster anyway

Best of luck for the journey

Posting while driving... Can anyone look up the vagcom addresses for reading coolant and oil temps live while in the car please? And also what an acceptable range of readings are? I can run three live readings at a time so if theres one other too that's cool..

      Thanks! I'll check back soon.

O2 might be another reading that's worth checking out. MAF too. Sorry, I don't know how to get to them I have a Mk4 bentley if that might help at all...

90 miles. At wendys eating while we figure if the carbis burning off old oil still, or if new stuff is going in there. It really can't be, but it just seems like there's so much coming out the exhaust. Goodbye cat!

I had the same thing happen to me years back. Took a lonnnnng time to burn off (as in days). Surprisingly the cat still functioned ok. Good luck on the rest of your trip.

I should also note, 1L is a lot of oil. If you can detach the exhaust and drain it, might be worthwhile... although flames shooting out of your exhaust might be interesting if it gets hot enough to light up. Keep an extinguisher handy ;-)

See your signature? I did do it.

22 miles to go. More diagnosis tomorrow. New oil cap seal has failed, which makes topping up the oil fun.

Still having fun though. Just got to make it there... And back!

Tomorrow I can start to work out what the heck happened. The car drove fantastically otherwise. The non power steering has a great weight and the brakes are perfect. The clutch pedal is still a bit low though.

Woot! Nothing like trial by fire. Guess you'll know where the bugs are.

rynodyno312: Just curious, but what makes it a "controversial" engine?
Fritz27: The LS7 made some anti-Semitic remarks back in 2008. Look it up.

It did indeed happen. I saw it in person and talked to Jamie (the brit) himself for a few minutes.

I'll post pics tomorrow, after I upload them.

It was nice meeting you, Jamie. Sorry to hear about the turbo and the ECU failures, good luck getting it home in one piece.
      Deal with it.

I saw you and the car today. Tried to say hi but didn't want to interrupt. Looks great.
