    +update+

The car is at my parents house now and I'm taking care of it, ie removing all the rust.

    Hi,

Just one hour ago my doorbell rang. I was a bit surprised as I wasn't expecting anyone. It was my nephew, he wanted to show me his new car:

1974 FIAT 128 with a FIAT Ritmo Engine+G'Box. This thing is a blast to drive :-) And people's reactions are fantastic, we had a guy in an Impreza STi slow down and give us the "thumbs up"

Little fact I didn't know (anymore): It has IRS all around and a traverse leaf spring at the rear and an automatic brake bias modulator. It is just sad they had that much of rust problems back then...

Thats brilliant, especially liking the interior and the wheels.

Do you know what size they are? guessing 4x98 too being a fiat?

I have no idea what either of those little cars are but I am suffering from cuteness overload! I want both of them! I apologize in advance knowing I am not supposed to call cars cute.

Yeah, the interior is cool :-) That's right, 4x98 bolt pattern, 14" diameter. Original Alfa Romeo wheels. I guess from the 80's Giulietta?

Nice, my friend is looking for new wheels for his Fiat Uno, quite hard to find anything decent as 4x98 isnt very common and old Alfa/Lancia wheels dont come up very often for sale. I think those wheels would look great on his Uno though, ill show them him as a possible option.

LoL, yes it's really small. No big difference between this and the one on the 126 (the white one in the background).

The stickers were put on by the girl (!) who was the previous owner. GTI EATER is a bit far fetched, but the car weighs a little over 800kg (1600lbs) and has around 80hp and that's noticeable.

I guess it's ok :-) The red one is my nephew's car, the FIAT 128. The white one is my FIAT 126bis. Amazing cars

Car looks great My friend has a orange one whose metal is slowly getting thinner and thinner. This one looks solid though!

There's a bunch of great later 4x98 wheels out there.

Pretty common. My Fiat 850 Spider had the spare in the trunk, with the engine underneath it.

He could use 4x100 wheels with PCD variable lug nuts/bolts. Of course he would NEED hubcentering rings.

Nice little car BTW. I alwat find it interesting when the spare tire is in the engine bay

Is that a yellow prancing horse sticker on the left fender?

  23. 08-06-2010 09:11 PM #23
Compared to today's cars, it is amusing to see just how big the 128's greenhouse is compared to the rest of the car's body.

And those are some serious looking exterior window blinds on the buildings. Is Luxembourg far enough North that it never gets totally dark at night in the summer?

It's no TC engine unfortunately, but it must be the next biggest one, the 1.5 liter maybe? That one had 85hp IIRC.

No, it's some "danger" sticker. I still don't know if I would peel that one off, looked kinda funny to me.

Not really, I don't kmnow what the story behind them is, but they're fairly widespread in this region, ie also in Germany, Belgium and France they're used a lot.

Both cars are extremely cool - just lose the stickers on the 128.

The 128 is the car that underpinned the Ritmo/Strada and Delta... and hence the Integrale.

128 were pretty common in my country, the leftover from Yugoslavia. they made them in zastava, the same factory that made the Yugo, the car that i think most of you are familiar with. some years ago my father bought it for a spare car while his mk2 golf was in the shop. personally i didn't like it, it felt like a wooden box on wheels, plus i heard they were pretty weak in accidents, even in those years.
but i love to see old cars on the roads, the "good" an the "bad" ones, because they remind me of different times that we so soon forget about.
but it was still a better looking car than the Zastava 101 (stoenka):

this was a hatchback version of the 128

  29. 08-07-2010 11:18 AM #29
I would completely have that. I love it!

The Zastava version was a bit different in that it was a hatchback.

Zastava's 128-based Skala remained in production until November 2008. Towards the end of its life it was claimed to be the world's second-cheapest new car, with only the Tata Nano being less expensive.

'Never wanted to own one when I was a kid, but I still admired the 128's advanced design and functionality. BTW, spare tires mounted inside the engine compartment used to be a common thing with Euro cars, and some Asians, too, such as Subarus.

As the OP's pics demonstrate, if one happens to be odd enough to own a car that has the spare there, it makes a great bucket for spares; it'll hold some spare fluids and a small socket set that one might not want cluttering up the trunk
