    Thread: Replacing front subframe

    1. 08-19-2010 05:09 AM #1
Bent the front subframe on my 2000 gti Need to replace it. Was able to find a subframe from salvage but the labour to replace is it quite expensive.

Any comments on replacing the front subframe myself, haven't been have to find any diy on replacing it just lowering it so not sure how difficult it is.

      Any comments appreciated thanks!

It's actually pretty easy for anyone mildly inclined with tools. You just need to make sure you have the right tools to get the job done as with anything you do.

Just MAKE SURE you get an alignment afterwards

Not too old to resurrect this...

Any details other than it being not too hard? Just broke off the half-@$$ welded nut inside the subframe and am considering replacing the whole thing instead of performing surgery.

Ive done the same thing. To fix it, at least temporarily, you need to put a hole in the subframe and put the bolt through and put a nut on the end of it. It's a pain

It's quite easy to replace the front subframe. Remove both 30mm 12-point hub nuts, to allow the hubs to move more freely. Remove the 3 13mm bolts on each lower ball joint and pull them out of the wishbones. Remove the 4 13mm bolts that hold the steering rack to the subframe. If applicable, unbolt the exhaust mount at the rear of the subframe, should be two 13mm bolts. Remove the two 16mm bolts that hold the gearbox mount to the gearbox. Once all that's done remove the 4 21mm bolts that hold the subframe to the chassis rails in order to drop the subframe, you may need to use a jack to lower it.

Once it's removed swap over whatever parts you're keeping. (Wishbones, gearbox mount, anti-roll bar + drop links.) And refit via the reverse order of removal.
