I was looking at getting a 2011 Base GTI, and I was wondering if it is possible to add MFSW buttons to the steering wheel after I upgrade the radio to a RCD510? I know it should be fairly simple to swap out the trim pieces on the steering wheel and add the buttons, but I was wondering how you would wire them into the head unit. Is it possible, or should I just forget about it?

And yes I know that I can get a better stereo, MFSW buttons and a sunroof for $1,700 more. If I had the money, I would. But I'm a young guy, already paying out the a$$ for insurance and I can't swing the extra $1,700.

Does your 2011 GTI have a light that comes on for the bluetooth connection next to the sunglasses holder?

I would recommend a trying to find one of the last few 2010s or saving some more money before buying a car that doesn't have what you want.

I don't see adding the buttons as an easy thing.

i try to do the same thing, my gti late 2010 (already my11) came out without the MFSW so i need to install the button after.

i already found the button mask (22), the little control module inside the steering wheel behind the airbag(19), and the cable connecting buttons, horn, and airbag to the steering wheel electronics. (which is the module n°16 on vcds)

this is the problem: apparently, my2011 GTIs should have different components and assembly compared to my2010 GTIs, so the normal CD module that you would buy for an ordinary gti V and maybe gti VI 2010 retrofitting could not fit with our steering assembly.

i tried to figure out what steering control module i needed and nobody can tell me for sure what part number I need.

this is the new assembly (after may 2011)
it's italian etka, basically if you have a normal steering wheel, you should have 5K0 953 549 C but this doesn't support button functions. THEY have replaced it with the B version (sold as spare part) and on the ross tech website they say it can work with MF buttons, so i think this is the module to look for 5K0 953 549 B, but i'd like to get a positive answer from who is more confident with such theese problems.
check with vag com cable and post an autoscan!

this is the old (2010) assembly for gti VI (prior to may 2010) the control module n°6 should be now integrated in the n°2 of the other table.

IF the cables are there (harness)
      You need:

      1K0 953 549 CD
My Beetle is a chick car and my wagon is a mom´s car. But I really don´t care about stereotypes.

At least I got IRS, proper gauges and interior and a decent Hood lift strut"

yesterday i've asked to my friend to scan another gti My2011 with MFSW installed, to see what module they install in the VW factory.

      It's a 5k0 953 569 K (which has been now replaced with 5k0 953 569 G).

the module 1K0 953 549 CD should be ok for cars up to my2010.

can anybody tell me if this module 5k0 953 569 G fits with my base my2011 gti?

      update:

With this setup you can add MFbuttons to the base version on GOLF gti steering wheel, without changing the airbag, wiper lever, and the steering wheel itself.

      you need theese parts:

      5K0 953 549 B (electronic control module on steering column for my2011 models. The std. 5K0 953 549 C is not enough)

      5K0 998 537 B (MF buttons plate)

      5K0 971 584 A (airbag cable)

5K0 959 542 (control module INSIDE the steering wheel)

After mounting thees parts you will need to recode with vag com cable.

You have to disable the MFD commands via wiper lever to avoid conflicts with the new buttons and to enable the new parts.

If you do not change the levers and stay with 5K0 953 513 S you will get a "bad coding warning" but everything is fine. If you want to eliminate this warning you have to swap also the 5K0 953 513 S with the version without the MFD buttons on wiper lever.

Is this something a service department would want to take on, or is more of a "hack"?

after long time i have found the right long coding string to get rid of all the errors in the ECU.

first of all, you need all theese parts, as I said before.
      5K0 953 549 B
      5K0 998 537 B
      5K0 971 584 A
      5K0 959 542
      5K0 953 513 M (with cruise control)

then start VCDS and put this code in module 16 (steering wheel) 108A140000

it does work for gti / gtd with manual gearbox and cruise control. Zero errors in ecu

@blackdiamond: if you go to a service with the part numbers above and the coding they should fix everything for you, but this mod is a matter of 1 hour even if you are not an expert. In my opinion this is such an easy job that a service dept, would cost too much!

Thanks! It's on my short list and my local mechanic has agreed to give it a shot. I haven't seen anyone price these parts out. What's the ballpark?

Are you sure about that last part number? The closest I can find at Keffer VW is part number 5K0-953-513-M-9B9 The description sounds right though and I found all of the other parts.

9b9 should refer only to the color of the wiper lever (black). anyway, your part number is right.

remember that the important thing is to order the part WITH cruise control, but WiTHOUT the multfunction display buttons on wipers lever.

you can also try thecode i posted without changing the original levers on gti/gtd, it works, but there is a conflict on the cruise control button. If you dont mind you can save some money. I didn't like to have issue on the ecu so in the end i changed also the wiper lever.

I have read that that if you have the mf wiper stalk these buttons are direct plug in along with some coding. But according to this thread that appears not to be the case?

While I have a GTI with a flat bottom, control-less wheel, I can confirm that buying these parts and a little vagcom works.

      EDIT: super mega necropost, sorry!
