What a loss. It's been almost a year now since he's passed and I've had the intro to BYS as my ringtone for almost as long.

    funny subject...
when I was growing up, hip hop was a culture, representing 4 elements, and not a genre of music. the genre of music was known as rap music. and rap music has it's own sub-genres.

I believe in linguistic Darwinism, so words can change in meaning.

but I hear these terms used with no real standardized meaning.
I remember someone saying they listen to hip hop and not rap. it seems as if hip hop is referred to as rap music that they prefer.

not trying to pick bones but I think the sub-genre the op is referring to is "conscious rap music".

I hear where you're coming from. What you said as about someone listening to hip hop and not rap. That is part of the problem. They will give you a list of artist they consider Hip Hop and the same for rap.

It still is a culture. Look around the world. Many countries exhibit the same way it was in it's early years/decade. Showcasing through the struggle/consciousness/fun and so on.

I still go to DJ and B-boy battles time to time. Not as much as before. I've had my son at record stores, during performances, battles and hopefully get him to see live b-boy shows & battles.

The commercial aspect has misconstrued a lot and people assume it is only music. If it was embraced commercially the right way and not as a money maker things would still be how it once was. So much of the culture is not televised and put to the side or background.

oh yeah... it's still a culture, no doubt.
but the elements- graffiti art, break dancing, emceeing, and djaying.. are what make the culture.
rap music is a byproduct of two of those elements- emceeing and djaying.
now the term "hip hop" has definitely evolved into a crazy monster!
here's an example- the black eyed peas ten years ago vs. today!

I didn't get my first dose of what I or you guys consider hip-hop until the first Rawkus Soundbombing CD. After that, Company Flow, Pharoah Monche, Black Star, Quasimoto, Beat Junkies, Guru, J5 and all those guys were different as opposed to what everybody else was listening to back in the mid-late 90s. You know, the Cash Money, No Limit and Ruff Ryders type nonsense.

Still listen to it today, it may not be popular but the ladies and my boys don't mind it if burning. Chill beats and lyrical raps are where its at for me.

Great example. I had to explain how different they were in the early years to a so called fan that knew all about them before.

ask any "hip-hop" head about the legitimacy of their debut album...
their latest album brings new meaning to the term "wack".

krs and wu-tang would do the same thing with fergie for that type of mulah!

(well maybe not the SAME thing!!)

You are onto somehing to a point, perfect example : Ice Cube.

Today I woke up with Bird in the hand stuck in my head. I already have the album on CD, but I went and bought the record so I could use the song in my set.

    -AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
    -Death Certificate

Seminal hip hop albums regardless of what you feel about west coast rap or whatever. The Predator and Lethal Injection after that were good, but not bonafide classics.

    Ice Cube now

This dude is sometimes overlooked. Granted he is no longer with us, but I would listen to him over 2-Pac any day.
