Thread: No oil change or maintenance for 2011 Haldex?

    1. 09-21-2010 07:18 PM #1
I thought the fluid and filter needed to be changed periodically in the Haldex four unit but there is no mention of any maintenance schedule for it in the manual. Is that an oversight or are they now filled for life?

I remember reading that the oil and oil filter needs to be changed every 20,000 miles. See page 14: http://www.billswebspace.com/HALDEX.pdf

If VW is not recommending a fluid and filter change, they need a slap. I know in the 2010 manual, you have to read very carefully each and every list on every maintenance schedule to find stuff. It took me 3-4 reads to find the recommendation for a transmission fluid change. They don't make it easy to read.

2009 and 2010 not part of carefree service suppose to be done every 40k. 2011 looks like they added it at 30k under the free service. This is directly from my service sheets.

Guys, thanks for the info. I wish they included the service intervals for the Haldex unit in the (multi-vehicle) maintenance book they included with the car. Makes me wonder what else is incorrect. Is there a better (generally accessible) source of current maintenance schedules for the Tig? I've worked on all my cars over the last 40 years, have a CAN cable and the VCDS software, and plan on doing all my maintenance once the free period ends.

I just got off the phone with one of my local dealers (service dept) and they confirmed, at least on my 2010 Tiguan, that the fluid is changed at 40k miles. Is that poor maintenance on VW's part or will the fluid last that long without damaging the coupling unit?

I have a sneaky suspicion that VW did this to avoid the added cost of replacing the fluid while the car is under the carefree maintenance.

      Here's a Haldex filter after 90k...

Draw your own conclusions, I'm FWD so I don't care.

Thanks AudiSportA4 for that link, it was just what I was searching for. I figured they made this new version “lifetime” fill when VW removed the maintenance from their schedule. I've seen pictures of the older Haldex version along with its fluid/filter change procedure but nothing on this new version. This version (IV I believe) doesn't look anything like the ones shown in the procedures I've seen. Mine doesn't have a drain plug and the filter housing is covered and doesn't look like the older version either.

I guess I'll have to find a source for that new style filter and Haldex “lifetime” fluid and change both every 20,000 miles. I'll start with our local VW dealer.

Here are some picture of this Haldex version ...

      Hi.

I stumbled upon the same problem on a VW Transporter 2010 4Motion, also with Haldex 4.
I accidently damaged the white plastic plug when trying to remove the filter, resulting in a leak.
VW said there was no replacement part, so I took matters in my own hands.

I contacted Ramtech (www.ramtech.se) who provided the filter with plastic plug, aluminium cover and new screws for about $50.

      Send them an email.
