We can use them and see how it goes. From what I've read they can cause server problems when there are numerous players in the server. Causing lag, and in some cases a crash of the server.
Boat problems seem to be hit and miss. However minecraft carts cause major problems. Wilder built one last night, and as soon as he got in it I got a laundry list of errors in the server log, and the server nearly crashed, kicking everyone but myself.

Well I've embarked on a journey to explore our world. I've been walking for 3(in game) days, and have found some insanely cool places.

How does this game work, is it browser based? Will it run on a Mac? I don't see any specs on the website.

I played it on my work PC tonight.... [snooooring]
I explored, dug some mines, made some stuff... and got bored.
So when do the skeletons and creepers show up?

Basic Minimap of our current location. The more you explore, the bigger the save file gets, and the more I can render. the original render of this was about 20x taller than this one, as I went on a long journey in a single direction.
If we want to develop a larger full map, we need to explore in all directions.

Someone shoot me a PM with the server address so I can join. Doing some late night work and bored!

I was playing single player- the free version.
And I do understand the attraction at some level.
I can only assume the vast majority of enthusiastic Minecraft players never had Little Big Planet (no PS3), so this easy building a game area thing is all new. And that's cool.

the ideas behind minecraft aren't new. They are just cute and well implemented. The virtual geography is really fun to explore, plants grow, there's really good lighting, etc. Multiplayer is fun, but it is lacking a few things like carts. I think once the game matures and all the bugs are worked out it will be a a pretty cool game to play around with. However, I can totally understand if people don't like it.

I agree, this is definitely a game for "certain" people and not for others. As are most games. We had a conversation during the game - we had all spent time recreating old-school maps on various other games. Obviously we shared a bit of a geeky fascination with building things, etc.
I just enjoyed the random aspect of it. Under my small abode (looks like a small port to the left on the map there) I found various caves that go down for...well nearly forever. I spent an hour fixing a leaking ocean that was pouring into some of these caves so that I could use them. It is simplistic, and I find it addictive - but I can see instantly why some wouldn't.
I'd prefer adding baddies at some point - so there is more of a point to multiplayer (ie. Build a fortress or dwelling to repel baddies at night, and be more careful digging). For me its just legos on the computer and great fun.

I've never understood the desire to recreate other game maps/scenes.
But those recreations get exponentially more "hits"- at least that's what I saw in LBP and ModNation Racers.
You really need to put that on your resume.I spent an hour fixing a leaking ocean
Yeah- I can see the building thing. But watching the Utoob videos just had me thinking "I could make a much better version of that in LBP".I'd prefer adding baddies at some point - so there is more of a point to multiplayer (ie. Build a fortress or dwelling to repel baddies at night, and be more careful digging). For me its just legos on the computer and great fun.
I think the main attraction with Minecraft is the "works on almost any PC" part- you can do this at work. It's really just a cool time killer.![]()

Lets not forget that this game is in Alpha. Not a finished product, not even a Beta. Alpha. Made by one guy. Who now suddenly has hundreds of thousands of dollars, getting office space, and is hiring programmers to help him.
I think this games golden days are still in the distant future. See "Narbacular Drop" aka "Portal".

I really want to, the only thing that keeps me from doing it are creepers. Zombies, Skellies go away once the sun comes up. But creepers stay, and they can only be killed with fire, which means they wont die before they explode. We would be doing nothing but repairing damage every morning.

I tried to make a freak show underneath my tower, but the zombies got free. And I can't kill them. I guess I'll need to spend some time rounding them up again.

i want creepers because it is the only way to get gunpowder and make tnt unless the admin is online.

Well, your not going to get gunpowder when you cant kill them. BTW, I'll put more powder in the chest when I get home today.
Ok, if everyone is cool with the monsters. I have no problem putting them back in. I'll put more fire in the chests too, as that is their only weakness.

did the admin placed those "burning floating wood" or they spawn naturally??

Does Redstone work on the server? Tried to make an automatic door, and nothing seemed to work.

we still can't kill the mobs? or fire will kill them?
