Thread: Fs 1997 vw gti vr6

  1. 10-05-2010 08:53 PM #1
I have for sale a green 1997 VW GTi VR6. The car has 134,xxx miles on it. The timing chains have not been replaced, however there is no rattling on start up. I will get a video of start up to prove this.

The Story: I bought the car for fun. What I have replaced on it has been mainly for reliability. When I originally bought the car the sunroof track was broken. I replaced the sunroof track and the sunroof and there are no leaks!! It also had a small oil leak from the oil cooler. I replaced the inner and outer oil rings and changed the oil, and had no more leaks. The car originally had a small coolant leak from one of the lines. I purchased all of the forge motorsports cooling lines and replaced every cooling line. I overtightened the clamps and broke off the thermostat housing. Since I knew I would have to take the front end off I decided to go ahead and replace everything. So I added a masontech crack pipe, brand new thermostat housing and the housing the connects the thermostat and the crack pipe. Brand new thermostat, gaskets, o-rings for the cooling sensors, all new hardware, and a new auxiliary water pump. So everything on the cooling system is brand new except for the waterpump and the radiator. I had a problem with burning oil through the intake, so I bought a brand new intake elbow and sensor and added an oil catch can. I removed the entire interior and cleaned all of the metal inside. The ignition switch started having problems during the summer, I pulled and replaced the ignition switch with a brand new one and have had no problems with it. Finally the original battery which had been used for five years gave out so I replaced it and replaced the ground terminal and ring.

    Exterior:
The paint is in good condition. There are a few scratches and only one dent. There are a couple spots of rust under the paint under one window. There is some surface rust on part of the engine bay and that's it. There is no rust on any other part of the car. The paint is in good condition, the corners of the front bumper have been rubbed by something. The antenna mast is broken and leaks a little, I have a brand new antenna base and mast to replace it. The windsheild has a crack across the bottom of it. All the wipers are brand new and the front are the nice bosch wiper blades.

    Interior:
The interior is in okay shape. The dash is great with no cracks or scratches. The rear seats and passenger seat are all in great condition with no tears or rips. The driver's seat has a couple tears in it. The carpet is in good condition. The headliner has some stains from where the old sunroof leaked. It is missing a couple trim pieces. But what is there is in good condition for the most part.

Mechanically as stated above the car runs well. It has lowering springs or struts I'm not sure what brand. One of the tie rods needs to be replaced as the car pulls to one side when letting off the throttle. I have two new tie rods to replace it. I also have two new ball joints although neither ball joint needs to be replaced. It also has a new wheel bearing, but neither needs to be replaced. The power steering line from the reservoir is leaking slowly, I have a new one to replace it. The previous owner didn't know if the heatercore leaked or not, so I've left it unconnected as it was when I bought it. The cruise control does not work, but I do have a tested cruise control unit to go in that works. I also have a factory alarm with remote lock feature that will go with it. I do not have a fob for it though.

Overall the car is in good condition. It has been reliable for me.

Update: Just put new tires on all four corners, purchased the high pressure power steering line(have not installed it). Someone threw a rock through the back window. I'm ready to get rid of the car, $2500 come pick it up. Hard to beat that price for a running driving rust free VR6! The best way to reach me is through email pts116@gmail.com.

would you be interested in selling the wheels?

  5. 10-07-2010 01:23 PM #5
Unless the buyer has another set of wheels, no. I only have that set of wheels for the car.

also why is the rear sitting so high?

  34. 04-27-2012 08:46 AM #34
Columbia SC, last time I made the trip to DC I believe it was about ten hours. Don't know about the rear sitting higher, I assume the previous owner never adjusted the rears.
