Thread: Custom 3-Piece Wheel Design *PICS INSIDE*

    1. 10-07-2010 01:28 AM #1
Alright guys here the deal, as a personal early 20's project i want to machine myself new center pieces for my 3piece Braid wheels, I simply looking for your opinion in wich direction I should go with the design. Open to suggestions, improvements, new designs.

My main ideas are keeping it classic (what i have now is more of a bbs style) VS go with something new hot never done before

(no comments on the car, i know it needs bodywork but thats after the mechanical aspect is taken care of!)

Here's a picture of the current wheels as they sit :

And here's the new centerpiece design :

      Thanks for your input guys!

i would do a circular saw blade powder coated black with chrome lip and either two girls back to back as a center cap or traditional vw sign in either chrome or platinum. not sure what to go with for the center cap finish. but that would be one of a kind wheel no doubt.

Black with chrome lip is hideous and played out.

i think it depends on how you set up the wheel if you're doing something original you can pull off the chrome lip. you can do the whole wheel black but then your point of stand out is the center cap when its not suppose to be the stand out part, but what type of wheel would do instead of chrome

I see you're proficient with a CAD program, but designing faces is completely different when you actually have to put it into production. Do you know about offsets/backspacing, mounting pad thicknesses, strength, etc?

Well, what I'm saying is do you know how to adjust specs of a wheel via the mounting pad thickness in conjunction with the lip, barrel, mounting options (face, sandwich, reverse face), etc?

Dont worry! I tend to overdo stuff so all of the above is considered and looked at just looking at different possible designs that could work. This program does it all from forces and stress to wall thickness, machining all of it.

Mounting wise i have a little of play with the offset so im not to worried plus i will finalize that once i'll find the design i want.

      Concaves are on theyre way!

No ik about it but I mostly used cad for building kitchens and offices before I got into cars so I'm still learning about wheel design on cad and in general

a little off the subject of wheel design, but how much money do you think this is going to cost? Are you planning on doing it yourself (assuming you have the capabilities), or are you going to bring the design to a shop and have them do it? I'm just wondering because this kind of intrigues me, the cost aspect of it I mean.
