Thread: The ominious Megasquirt 3x Want to start a how-to

  1. 10-14-2010 01:29 PM #1
Okay so I've been working on rebuilding the engine of a 2000 AEB golf I shaved and balanced rods put new pistons and new valves and all gaskets a stainless manifold with t/3 turbo big front mount ic and now the ECU is bad so time for mega-squirt. I want to run 3x but haven't found any reliable information on whether or not it will work with the stock instrument cluster and whether or not some form of IAC configuration is needed. I am planning on posting an in depth thread for the conversion from stock ECU so any help would be appreciated

For 2000 it should work fine, I don't see why not. The cluster just needs certain voltages going to it so splicing into the factory interior harness should be easy, it's just making sure the outputs of your MS are the same as the inputs for the cluster.

IAC is up to you and how youll be using the car

im not familiar with how the mk4 cluster gets its info, but you can build output circuits to feed rpm to clusters, im not sure how the mk4 cluster gets temperature or vehicle speed though.

consider also how this affects the abs system...

Okay, I converted the drive by wire to cable TB from a 94 jetta 2.0. Now I have the MS3 hooked up and I'm putting in all of the sensor values and details, so I have a few questions... First off, what is the style of Cam sensor wheel I know it is a hall effect but how many teeth and how many missing also what about the crank wheel, I believe its a VR but I cant seem to find accurate data on any of the specs also what angle BTDC? I am hoping someone who has done this before will know. I also am not quite sure how to hook up the IAC motor (also from the 94 jetta 2.0) it is a two wire and on the wiring diagram from the jetta it shows both wires connecting to the ECU but on the ms3 one wire goes to the ECU and the other to 12v. Also if anyone has a tune started or something i can go off of that would be nice to have. As I am planning on writing up a full thread for anyone else wanting to megasquirt their 1.8t any help is appreciated and will be reciprocated once I get all of the bugs and small details worked out. Thanks.

The cam sensor wheel needs to be modified to work with MS. It has 4 teeth on it 2 big and 2 small and you need to cut off both big teeth and the small tooth that is passing through the sensor at TDC. The crank wheel is VR 60-2 teeth with a #1 tooth angle of 78 degrees. The ABA IAC does need 12v on one leg and the other to MS. Run it at 95Hz. I have a couple of msqs kicking around shoot me a PM with your email and I'll send you one.

Thanks, PM sent. So how did you wire up your two wire IAC to the ms3x? do I ground the other contact or hook it up to the ms3 sensor ground

    Neither, 12V to pin 1(on the IAC) and pin2 to idle(pin 9) on the MS3X DB37.

If you're using a full AEB, it should already have the single pulse cam sensor. It's a hall, not sure if that was posted earlier.

IAC ~100hz is perfect, just over 30% dc is a good start for warm, more for cold.

I think a 2000 still uses a tach wire that can be driven from the MS. I know there was on a 99 2L.

hey guys i NEED some assistance

I have a mk3 and i've converted to the mk4 dash and complete wiring harness (headlight to brake light). I want to install a MSv3.57 which i previously ran in my 16v mk2.

    1. How do i splice the ms wiring into the mk4 stuff?
    2. Do i need to convert to coil packs or can i retain the dist?
    3. How do i fix the rpm signal prob?

Exact year of the gauge cluster would help too.

No clue on the year but it looks late model from the gauge style, my wife's 04 looked like that. 99-00 would be a better bet.
