Parting OUT. The Shell and Motor are SOLD.

After much thought I have decided to sell my Baby. I started this build about 5 years ago and it took over 3 years of saving, spending and slaving over each detail of this build. I have met alot of really cool Scirocco Owners and I hope I can come back to the Scirocco world in the near future. I am selling my car because I have too much going on right now and it's really beginning to be too much.

Lets start from the beginning. The car was originally purchased for $2000 in running condition.

    Exterior
The car was completely stripped of all rubber, glass, wires for the $5000 paint job. After paint I installed a new headliner ($350 w/reciept) , all new rubber and a brand new Pilkington windshield ($275 w/reciept) and new rubber all around the car from Vintage Rubber. ($500). The duckbill look like new with no cracks ($300), the Euro Bumpers were almost new ($1000) The H1 and H4 head lights are new ($250), The taillights were NOS ($200)

    Suspension:
Bilstein front Race Struts V36-0103 ($579.90 w/receipt) w Bonrath strut towers ($150) Bilstein Rear with ground control ($300) Race springs with 400/300 spring rate ($200) No Sway bars

    Under the hood:
02A 5 speed manual trans with Peliquin Limited Diff. (Paid 2251.97 w/reciept). It was completely build by Kraftwerks. This trans maybe has 500 miles on it.
1.8t abf from 99 passat. (paid $1500) This engine only had 35,000 miles when I got it and I only put 500 miles on it. The car runs on the original passate computer and and wiring harness. Each connection has been soldered for reliability. The turbo was purchased new ($900) and only has 500 miles on it. Turbo pipes all custom ($300) Intercooler 29x5.75x3 Spearco Race ($325 w/reciept), Downpipe is a Techonics 1.8t a1 for Scirocco1 Noncat ($393.50 w/reciept) Exhaust 2.5 Early a-1 aluminized w/borla muffler ($371.50 w/reciept) Alternator is the new serpentine setup with the flat belt drive ($150). Brand new air meter 037-906-461-cx (252.98 w/receipt), this car has the aftermarket front reinforcement bar ($150) This bar keeps the front valence from breaking from all of the power and the car generates. WRD O2A motor mounts for A1 Scirocco and mechanical Slave Kit ($649.36 w/reciept) New Large radiator with aftermarket fans. ($200) New water pump. Cable shifter for 02A trans ($150) ECS Tuning Stage 1 Clutch kit w/lw steel flywheel ($429.68 w/reciept) 11 inch brake kit that was installed 2 months ago with only 20 miles on the front breaks and pads ($250) New Bigcrank battery purchased on 7/2/10 ($3.47 w/receipt)

    Interior:
Recaro NOS Seats from 20 years ago. They came new in the box but they are period correct. Recaro/scirocco seat tracks The interior is complete with carpet clean dash with a limited amount of cracks 5 vdo gauges. No rear seats

This car has been garaged everyday for the last 5 years since I purchased it. Like I said I may have put 500 miles on it since I got it running. This car only gets better with age. You will not find another car for sale like this for a long time. Last time I checked I put $20,000 into it.

This is just the big stuff that I can remember. There aren't too many builds with almost all receipts and a full record of the build day by day year by year. Alot of love went into this labor. I built this car the way I did because I thought I was going to keep this car forever and give it to my son. (I'll build a new one in a few years.)

The only thing I can say bad about the car is it might need a new starter because sometime the solenoid sticks. The car starts like a new car on the first try even after the car sits for 3 months it starts on the first try. The whole car is in A condition. It's almost show quality. But I didn' want to built it too nice where I didn't want to drive it.

If you are a serious buyer and have some question for me please let me know.

The pictures here are from day one until running so If you see unpainted turbo pipes they are ainted black now. If you see no carpet that is because that was taken before I installed it.

This is my build thread so you can see the work that was put into this build.
    http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...the-paint-shop

Selling for $14,500 with the 15x7 BBS RS 001 wheels is A condition with new tires.
Selling for $12,500 without the BBS. Replacements will be 14x6 tear drops from 87 16v Scirocco. I will have to 10.1 inch front brakes though, which I have.

Do you live in California? If so, is the smog legal?

They will not allow you to enlarge the thumb-nails unless you're a member.

Also you didn't answer my question about where the car is registered.

    Thanks, George

Curious if it has been BAR'd for CA use or not.
    Thx.

Is the Scirocco Bar'd? Probably not because I don't know what Bar'd is

    Great looking car.

You might have more luck with the sale if you posted your location and the details of how it passes smog, if it does.

BAR = Bureau of Automotive Repair.

When you do an engine swap(other than ones that don't show much like swaping in an 3A bottom end) you must take the car to the Smog Referee to have it smoged for the first time. If the entire emissions system from the donor car(including instrument displays like a "check engine light") is intact, the referee will place a sticker on the vehicle. This sticker will have a bar code on it which can be read with a scanner. This sticker will tell a regular smog shop to smog the vehicle as though it was the donor vehicle.

This is why I asked if your car was registered. If you had gone through the above process(which I'm guessing you haven't since you don't know what it is), the car would be much more valuable to a California buyer. If you can't smog it when the registration renews, you park it.

I hate to be the "rabble rouser" to reiterate what has been mentioned many times before, when you do a great resto such as this, shelling out the $$ on the paint, modern engine (great one tho), and all the newer or refurbed parts etc, you should realize that you wont recoup all the expenses from what is in reality a $3,000 to $5,000 car, (remember the show quality resto'd "brazil brown" car that finally went for 4k?)...I have owned 16 VW's in the last 20 years and four of those were Rocco's, so I have alot of knowledge and can accurately price 'em. Again, I love your car and heck, I'd pay 6k for it in reality, and seeing this car nearly brings tears to my eyes because of all the VW's I've owned, my '81 Carribean Blue baby was my favorite of all, was featured in VW/Porsche in 10/'89 ("Pacific Blue") before I bought her. Cheers - RB

Don't be stupid. There are and have been cars out there that bring this kind of coin, and this is one of them. Paul's is another. You gonna go poop in the 'Mountain Green Mk1' fs thread too?

Just offering my $.02 based on my experience and extensive knowledge of the industry, and being 43, I know what I'm talking about when I say I remember these cars when they were new, and what they sold for in pristine condition. Many times we see sellers in here spend alot of dough on their ride and then offer it up for sale, but unlike a house or a Ferrari, you don't build "equity" into a car, hoping to recoup your costs, especially on a 30 yr old car, heck, I have a nice '88 BMW 735i, I could go put a $5k paint job, rebuild the engine, a five spd tranny in her, sweet BBS rims, low prof tires, new susp, hid angel eyes headlights, redo the interior...I bought it for $2k, even after spending 8-10 grand, I'd realistically sell it for 5 maybe $6,500, why? It's old, that's the market and no one in their right mind would shell out 15k for it, much less a Scirocco that's even older, and the starter even isn't working properly? It lacks common sense my friend. And yes, this certainly applies to the green Scirocco as well. Cheers

Well, aside from sounding like a butthead to you guys, your cars look awesome, esp the blue one , and yeah, I'd have a $#!+ eating grin if I saw her in my garage as well, I didn't own 4 of 'em if I didn't love 'em. Just to clear up something though, wasn't crappin on your rides, just should've said good luck on your sale instead, if someone DOES come up with those asking prices, more power to ya, bros. was just being realistic, when I was younger, I appreciated when someone in the know gave me some wisdom, even if I didn't like hearing it, but realized later they were right.

    "Paul's is another".

Had extensive conversations with Paul when his was for sale. He was/is located in Az. Didn't buy it when we couldn't figure out whether I could smog it here in Ca. without distroying it.

I'm actually a little less interested and a little less flush than I was then. But then I imagine what this must be like to drive when I take off in my wife's '09 Jetta 2.0T.

But I come back to the issue that I had with Paul's car. Can I register it here in Ca? Since the seller is not familiar with BAR, I have to assume that the car was not built with a visit to the smog referee in mind. In that regard, g60runner67 is correct about sales price. To demand that kind of money, the car needs to be turn key in every way including legality.

and shelled out $$ to get my $#!+ straight or it doesn't pass, simple as that...now of course, there was a time I knew someone that could "fix" my emissions equipment (of lack thereof) and viola, it passed, but that's something that could get me in alot of trouble. If I was gonna fork over that much coin on that car, it had better pass smog, have no mechanical issues whatsoever...and even then, I'd only pay that much on a Scirocco if it less that 20k miles on the clock, be all original, look like a "time warp/barn find" with nothing missing in the interior, front or rear, original paint, (and look as though Doc Brown towed it with the Delorean time machine from '81), and all the emissions equip working, and I've seen a couple of cars like that here a while back, and even they were under that asking price. There's another joker selling a white one with Callaway goodies in it, and its not as clean looking as the blue or minty green one, he LOWERED the price to $18k sure its rare, but jeez...I'll stop right here and just say good luck on that sale, more power to ya if someone wants to shell out that kinda money for it, especially nowadays

I agree with what you're saying g60.... It sucks for you Cali people and all the emissions BS! Yes, a car at that price better be turn key and ready to be driven hard!! You will not find a similiar power to weight ratio for the money.. Believe me... ask the guys with 450whp Evo's how they feel about a 77 What the F$#% was that going by them.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Are you a collector? There have only been a few on here that would fall into the collector status to be parked away in some nice garage with heated floors to be driven once a year... What's the fun in that? Besides, these cars stock don't exactly throw you back in your seat and turn sub 6 sec 0-60 times.

Give me a low mileage e30 m3... or a late 80's 911 and you have something that may appreciate in value.

I'd rather drive my baby, and Sciroccos modded right can be GREAT canyon carvers, (and of course straight line quick), as mine was...garage queens aren't really my thing, but I wouldn't mind one at least lol

Cheers
If I sell my BBS Wheels, Tires and bumpers for $3000 does that make the rest of the car worth $3000?? Remember the car is worth what you can get for it. If I part the car out I can get $14,000 easy. It's simple math. If someone want to build a car like this it will well surpass $20,000. Don't worry about the price of the car being too high, I have alot of potential buyers and I will let everyone know what it sells for. Wish me luck

George is very persistent about the fact that I didn't answer his question about the Bar issue even though he made it very clear that he was not a buyer.

No I never got around to doing that. I didn't know what you meant by calling it "Bar". My friends and I called it "refereeing".

I'm not concerned with that because I'm not selling it in CA only. There are 49 other states out there and I have had about 6 people that are interested and 4 are from out of state.

Bottom line if I were to part this car out I would get the $14000 out of it. I would rather not because it would break my heart if I couldn't find a nice home for my Blue Baby.

I hope I helped answer you question.

The last time That I contacted you I sent an PM:

"I'm doing this as a PM rather than a post to your thread because I don't want to be dumping on your car like g60runner67 has been doing. That said, I think you need to post a clear response about the smog issue. It seems like you took a currently registered(in Ca) Scirocco1 and swapped in the 1.8T and that's as far as you've taken it. If I'm wrong, please correct me. If I'm right and a Ca resident buys your car, they'll soon be unable to register it. It's my opinion that as you ask more for a given car, you have an obligation to be more and more open about what you're selling. $300 shells are "what you see is what you get". $14000 Scirocco1s are not.

If your car was silver or white, I'd be messaging to the effect that I'd offer $X if you would take it through the referee process. As it is, I really don't want a blue car regardless of how nice it is.

    Good luck with your sale."

I think that I made it pretty clear that I admire your car and that if it was a different color that I'd consider trying to buy it.

That said, lots of people who aren't going to end up buying your car are going to ask you questions.

Since I'm not going to end up buying it, maybe I should let others think of these questions themselves but people get in the middle of things and ask questions here all the time, buyer or not. This is an enthusiast's site not Craig's List. Since I've had some experience with the referee and some of your potential buyers may not have, I asked.

You still didn't answer all of my question. You said "Never got around to doing that" but was the car built to be refereed? Does it have all of the emissions equipment that the donor car had? I'll repeat myself. If you're selling a Scirocco1 this expensive, you need to be more forthcoming. You could have cleared this up long ago by answering completly. I'm not saying that this happened but by leaving this open you could give the impression that you're selling so soon after completion because you found out that you couldn't renew the registration.

As to out of state buyers, according to recent news articles I've read, more states have adopted or are planning to adopt the California smog model.

As I said in my PM, Good luck with your sale.
Classified forum rules require that you post a price. If you don't know what to ask, they suggest that you search past FS threads.

So, when your item sells, please don't edit out your price and description when you mark it "SOLD". Rather, edit to show selling price.

    I also have a opinion.

I had a few poeple who came to see the car and they were a little conserned about the loose ends that need attention. I decided to work on them. This car isn't cheap so I'm now on the job.

I fixed the starter. It cranks and starts the first time. It is especially nice with the new battery I bought 2 months ago.

The Recaro sliders weren't working right so I was lucky enough to get replacements from my friend Avi. Thanks Man. We installed the sliders and finally got the seat belts working the way they should

The drivers door was missing the bar that goes from the door handle to the door lock. I know I was lazy and I was hoping to get the next guy to do it. It only took Avi and I about a half hour to get it done.

We added drivers kick panel that says Scirocco on the drivers door and a few other small pieces. By then it was 1 am and we called it quits.

I have one more thing that is bothering me and I will be happy. The metal throttle cable holder that is supposed to go on the manifold hasn't been installed yet. I should have that done before the end of the month.

Here are a few pics from last night.
