when I worked for a VW dealer one of our local area corporate people would occasionally pay visits in a Passat W8 wagon with...wait for it...a 6-speed manual trans. Now THAT'S a rare freakin' duck.
It seems like I heard/read somewhere that VW built less than 50 W8 wagons with manual gearboxes.

I think that the rarest cars are the lower spec trim levels of the cheap cars. No one buys those, they are just built to be able to advertise a low entry level price.

A STOCK 99-00 Milano Red Civic Si...
Milano red was the rarest color in the USA (I think it was the same for Canada too, although EBP was replaced with Silver for the 2000 model year though.)
I would almost wager there aren't any left.

I think a lot of you missed the point.
You've either posted
A: Cars that were cheap little econocars and plentiful when new yet, oddly, 25 years later they are extinct when the cost of new brakes was more than the car was worth.
or
B: Cars that were expensive when new and didn't sell well
or
C: Limited edition cars that were always rare
I think the intent of the thread was for mainstream cars with low to comparable prices of the competition yet you just NEVER seem to actually see them anywhere.
Rare car with a not rare price tag : Mitsubishi Galant

You're right, finding a stock 99-00 Civic Si is quite difficult. But, a stock EM1 Civic Si with a clean title will set you back a pretty penny these days. Most of the ones out there have salvage theft titles or have been modded to death.

I have several cars that are rare and valuable. However, probably the rarest car I own is the least valuable.
My newly acquired '33 Continental Flyer in great original condition is the most rare as so many were destroyed in the metal drives of WWII. It was more valuable as scrap steel as it was one of the very first all-steel bodies. I know of less than 10 in any body style that exist today.
