Thread: What is one really unpopular opinion that you hold?

I would be amazed by something far from ordinary or routine. When I was a lad I saw a golfer, his name was Tom Watson, stand near the shore somewhere and hit a ball out of pretty tall grass and into the hole. It looked like a magic trick.

I once watched part of a motorbike race at the end of which a rider stopped in the track to do a burnout. Another rider came by, hit the first rider's leg and launched off his bike landing head first in the sand. He died immediately.

How anyone can watch golf on the television is beyond me, and I wouldn't voluntarily subject myself to 15 minutes of it to see that kind of Tom Watson shot again. I wouldn't really care to see someone die on a bike either, but it was extraordinary.

If a bunch of guys show up to play baseball, and then they play baseball, it is expected, not amazing.

Oh please, let's get into a debate on the semantics of the word amazing!

There is a tiny percentage of the world's population that can run/swim/hit a ball/shoot a ball/catch a ball/drive/swing a bat or club at the professional level. It is out of the realm of the ordinary and routine abilities of the average man or woman to compete on that level.

If you can't enjoy yourself at a baseball game with a few friends - well, too bad for you, I say.

I can enjoy myself with friends, but the game doesn't hold my attention. When the new ballpark opened I went. There was a pretty girl nearby and the bartender was generous.

The teams could have not shown and I doubt I'd have noticed. Nice park though.

This. And while Zuk says that these people are expected to show up and play a sport, I ask is it not worth it to watch that sport to see that amazing shot, or like two days ago, see Felix Hernandez throw a perfect game? They showed up and played not knowing he would make baseball history -- but he did.

If it's not, then to each his own.

Nope, not worth it. Booooooooooring. I even think professional auto racing is boring. I zone out when my fellow car guys start talking about NASCAR and F1.

I'd even say it's part of the same mindset that I mentioned when talking about fraternities. I'm not a "joiner"... the idea of taking a side and rooting for a sports team or player just doesn't make sense to me. That sort of group pride has always been foreign to me.

"You know, mang, we just, you know mang, we gotta play the defense mang. And we came together as, uh, uh, uh,uh, as uh, as a team and, just, you know, we played hard."

"Ahh yes, great insight! Back to the studio."

(This being said, I do love to go to a Cleveland Indian's game and will watch any game if it's on and someone wants to watch. I just think it's asinine to become so captivated by sports.)
you're completely completely off the mark here. the job of a beat writer is different than a someone writing something from afar. their job is to get the initial reaction to the game from the parties directly involved. yes that means players who don't really want to talk to but they have to get those quotes and use them in their game stories and store them for use in the future as the season plays out. go read Gay Talese's article on Joe DiMaggio and tell me that isn't journalism.

This stereotype gives sports fans a bad rap due to the idiots that make TV/news in the regard. Hating a team to the point of violence/anger/whatever is absurd.

I am a die hard Bears fan and I 'hate' the Packers. But not in the sense that most NFL dullards think. I don't anyone to get hurt, or anyone cheat to win, it's the competition. Wanting your team to win. We can't run gladiator games anymore or other 'barbaric' forms of competition so I think that primeval urge to want to be the best city/nation is an honest feeling and quite satisfying.

I could give a **** about most of the Olympic sports but damn if I wasn't excited to see Americans smoke other countries and win gold this summer.

Most people I know that aren't into sports really aren't competitive people, and that's fine. Different strokes for different folks.

My annoyance is that sports are to men (and some women) what celebrity gossip are to (most) women. It's pointless, frivolous and meaningless in the grand scheme of things. There are a billion other things to be more concerned with than what a bunch of people playing with balls are doing.
What defines meaning? What leisure activities carry more meaning than viewing sports? Sports bring countries together more than pretty much any other activity. Competition is inherent in our nature. Carrying that out via a controlled environment is only positive, imo.

Are you saying someone that goes out 3-5 times a week or someone that goes out at all? I can see an argument for the former for sure.

It started out pretty funny. It got stupid when people started taking it seriously. It's meant to be tongue-in-cheek, I know, but it really seems like some people have this "well, what if it did happen?" attitude pushing them to buy shotguns and make survivalist bugout bags.

Its not so much the kids themselves that I hate. Its the parents that photobomb their FB/Flikr/Instagram accounts with billions of photos and need to let the whole world know that their spawn just did something that every other human being has accomplished in the same time frame. I tend to ignore these people however and go back to my uninterupted stream of cars/scantly clad women and invites to concerts/food.
