How is the good ole Orion holding these days? One of my bros is going P-8s pretty soon and just because he is one of the first dudes to go P-8 he got a pretty descent deal out of it.

not really a sighting since it was me, but stopped in Shemya, AK not long ago, scariest approach and landing of my life. Pretty when we got on the ground though, though talk about the ends of the earth, hope I never break there. Here's Herky getting a drink

also, U-Tapao, Thailand, super cool, like being in a Vietnam war movie

I saw an F-5 taking off at MCI on 7/18. Looked like it was all black like the Top Gun "MiGs".
    Maybe just the light though.

Its hanging in there... I mean, the oldest airframes are approaching 50 years so the P-8 will be a welcome change. I hear the P-8 has a better single engine climb rate than a P-3 on all 4!

How long before you folks get the P-8A? Are you getting it in your 1st tour or possibly second?

^^ Nice Skycrane. Those are an odd creature. Today I could hear a MH-53E at the airfield. Those are pretty loud too.

I used to know a guy who flew Skycranes for the forest service in SoCal. He told me that if there was no reasonable access to water near a fire, they were authorized to drain people's swimming pools. If you think they're loud now, imagine waking up to one hovering 15 feet above your house on a Saturday morning.

Yeah, anything Aero Air is involved with is subject to scorn and ridicule.
And take a minute to think about what they're actually talking about doing... Flying a 100,000# jet, just about at max takeoff weight, with full flaps, at Vref, down a burning canyon 200 feet above the dirt
It just seems like a bad idea.

Only 100,000#? I think this one carries double that in retardant alone:

Really? Other than the full flaps, this sounds like what I do regularly. 130k+ 130kias at 300 feet is a normal drop for us and ~130 is a fairly normal approach speed

Granted the earth isn't on fire but plenty of herk crews deal with that too.

A herk has a large, straight, subsonic wing. A DC-9 has a tiny, swept, transonic wing.
Big difference at stall speed + 20%.
