whats up guys. i wasnt gunna make a build thread for this but what the hell. i found this car on craigslist for 180. the guy had it sitting in his garage for a few months. when i went to go pick it up it was nasty inside and out. there was even a dead rat under the car. the PO even told me his cat has been killing/finding rats in the garage.

my wish list is to get it to run good, then eventually swap a motor in it. im think aba turbo or vr6. maybe even a 16v. for now im just going to clean it up since its real nasty. it had a minor accident on the front end so i need to source some parts.

also, i like to thank VDub2625, and his A2resource.com web site.

    the bad :

the PO said it was overheating and said he thinks its the head gasket. the fans nor the temp gauge worked. so i replaced the thermostat. some help from VDub2625, i tracked down the issue. the plugs for the temp gauge wernt connected it. after that everything was working properly.

got to replace the beat dash with a better dash. i ripped out soooo much wires. he hacked everything. i cleaned out almost a bag full of random wires

the PO did some weird as alarm setup and ran wires everywhere.

    old dash

    wires mess

    newer dash

new hood and front end i need a tred hood n fender

hopefully thursday i can mildly detail the exterior and repaint the trim. if no im gunna try n clean the carpet.

Nice start on the project. Looks like you have the same oddball upper rub strips as my '89.

If I knew it was a $180 Golf I wouldn't have helped, I'm jealous. I've never had a Golf before. You beat my Jetta out by $20 on the price.

Bummer. I think mine are on with adhesive. Only downside is my car was resprayed probably 5 or so years ago and the shop taped the strips instead of removing them...so I'm not sure if it will look better or worse without the strips.

i got to do some work today. i replaced the heater core and door handle the PO hacked

    old next to the replacement

the heater core had most of those clips missing, and the tabs to the box via the firewall were broken. he even used some type of sealant to try and repair the core

the door handles were screwed up too. the rear side was broken. the drivers handle was rigged with some type glue or bondo glad its fixxed, i got annoyed opening the rear door to open the front

despite what many may try and tell you there are tons of good shelf compounds/waxes/polishes you can pick up easy, for cheap so you don't have to spend $80 in product just to clean your car

first a good shampoo then a claybar (done as instructed on box of claybar) in my experience claybar is one of the most important parts of detailing as this is like a fine sanding

I tend to use Meguairs shelf compound with a yellow foam pad on a run of the mill DA (harbor frieght $17 when on sale) on mr personal cars. With even strokes and steady speed you can do great work with it.

I then hit the car with Scratch-X or something like that to even out any buffing "holograms" or swirls, then any off the shelf Carnuba wax to seal everything in.

A few jobs that have been done with shelf materials, that summed up equaled about $40.

Cool. The buffer might even bring back more red. But be careful, it's single stage so it's easy to burn the paint and your pads will turn red

    What is that, a 1990?

I thought the goth chick at mailhouse plus was lying about it getting there in one day much better than what fedex online was telling me. 3-6 days at $5 less. I recommend anyone who is shipping get a quote from the website and the cute goth chick at the local mailbox place.
