      I have a 2002 GTI 1.8t
The remote started giving me problems a few weeks ago with locking/unlocking the car. It now rarely works at all, and when it doesn't, my interior lights don't work, neither do windows, heated seats, and alarm. I don't know if it is definitely a bad central convenience control module or if it could be one of the door latches. Sometimes when I hit unlock I will hear a very faint sound like the car is trying to unlock, but doesn't. Other times nothing. I have been removing the dome light fuse and reinstalling it...sometimes it would fix the problem but not so much anymore. Here is a scan...

Have a look to see if the ccm is waterlogged. My passat b5 ccm earth was submerged in water and i had some of the problems you have. I dried the area and cleaned the terminal and all works fine now.

pretty sure it isn't located in the same spot as in the passat.

i believe it is under the steering wheel and behind the trim...not under the carpet.
