ive been reading alot lately of people breaking there cam gear and bolts shearing and keyways breaking and such so ive been looking at alternate cam gear options.

can i get some suggestions and the such.
how does one differ from the others....

    thanks

Autotech is one. it looks to mount with the bolt, and by the description has pre-set amounts of adjustment in 1.5 degree increments. not good if you want to change 1 degree, or whatever.

Our new peg-vernier adjustment cam timing gears consist of a hard-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum gear and an alloy steel hub and cover plate. The proven vernier design allows for infinite incremental timing adjustment. It is possible to adjust the timing in 1.5° increments simply by aligning the holes in both the hub and sprocket at the desired position. There is no limit to the adjustment. A tool steel lockpin secures your timing position, held in place by the steel cover plate. Once set, this gear will not slip during use. This type of gear is great for "degreeing" your camshaft to exact timing specs with no danger of slippage once assembled. Made in the UK.
    http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_camgears.htm#acs

CAT has vernier style infinitely adjustable within 10 degrees either way i believe.

Cat Cams adjustable pulleys are made of top quality 7075 aluminum. In addition, the outer wheel is hard anodised for wear resistance.

Furthermore, Cat Cams cam wheels are designed for getting horsepower, not just for looking pretty. For easy and secure dyno testing, the nonius system lets you advance or retard your camshaft exactly per 1° over a range of +/- 10° (cam degrees). You can use the plug (see picture) to keep inner and outer wheels locked together while fixing the bolts to ensure everything stays in the right position.
    www.catcams.be

Eurospec Sport has one as well.

    Adjustable timing gear for 06A and 06B 4 cylinder 20V engines. Fits 99-04 Golf/Jetta, 01-04 Passat (AWM), 01-04 Audi A4 (AMB), 00-04 Audi TT
    http://eurospecsport.com/products/co...components.htm

those are for the 06A family of motor.

the 058 family (AEB) takes a different one. Piper makes one (i just sold mine) and it looks as if CAT does as well as Autotech.

here is Autotechs; (i have one of these also brand new laying about in case i decide to run an AEB motor in another project )

    http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_camgears.htm#acs

Autotech's newest adjustable cam gear is CNC-crafted entirely from both 6061 & 7075-T6 aluminum. The main portion including the teeth is hard-anodized for durability. The inner hub is anodized red. All factory timing marks are on the gear, to ensure simple, accurate installation. All marks are laser engraved. The gear is held firmly in your desired setting with ARP® stainless flange-head screws.

The gear is marked for 10 degrees advance or retard of the camshaft timing. You can correctly "zero-in" (degree) your camshaft to the recommended setting with ease. In general, advancing the cam timing increases low-end torque and improves throttle response. Retarding the camshaft timing will generally shift the powerband upward, increasing top-end power. This is also good when installing a resurfaced head, because the gear can be used to correct for timing loss (retardation) caused by the cam being closer to the crankshaft. This gear will allow you to adjust for the peak performance and power range desired. Weighs a scant 14 ounces. Fits 1.8L & 2.0L 16V gas engines in Mk1 and Mk2 vehicles. Also fits 150 horsepower B5 Passat 1.8T engines. Made in USA. Add our alloy intermediate shaft pulley below!

    Eurospec Sport also has an 058 gear;

Adjustable timing gear. Fits all 4 cylinder 1.8L, 2.0L 16V engines and 97-04 Audi A4 (AEB, ATW, AWM), 98-04 Passat (AEB, ATW, AWM) 058 4 cylinder 1.8L 20V engine.

What if you have an AEB head on a 06A block...what pulley would you use then?

the cam gear you use will always match the block used. there is an offset difference in the gear itself.

here are some pix i "found" of dialing in the cams..... and using the proper tools to actually make use of a degreeable cam gear. unless all you want it for is peace of mind for strength purposes.

after this, the head was boroscoped to verify clearance for valve to piston. all is well.
Joey @ DJM, you DA MAN!!!!!! and thanks to Pete, Bob, Collin for their advice and input

    thanks alot Aaron!!

very nice, def needs to be added to the FAQ sticky

i am just looking for one more along the lines of "piece of mine" for added strength. i don't wanna loose a head due to a littke keyway breaking. dialing cams is a lil outta my league for right now. something i wanna learn for sure but have yet to acquire the knowledge.

how easily is the part that keeps in contact with the belt. to me it looks like its just asking for those bolts to back out the slightest bit and then alter the degree of the cams, as well under high tq i would think that it would just spin, to me. what procautions can you take to make sure they stay in place, and if they did move...what would happen?

    they go in with loctite.

and worse that could happen if they LOOSENED would be that the cams go ~max 10 degrees one way or the other advanced or retarded. but i do not "think" it would be enough to cause damage.

if they fell out, world of hurt ensues.

and i check my CAT one (shown above in the degree wheel pix) by sliding the pin in the marked hole frequently. no issues as of yet.

well looking at it and knowing the motor would turn the gear counter clockwise if the loosened wouldn't it retard timing? but not enough for piston to valve contact at -10deg?

sounds right. would turn the inner part forward which would make the outer part get behind = retarded.

and i dont think 10 degrees is enough to cause issue, but i dont know it all. just some of it.

We have pretty nice cam gears available for 058 and 06A 1.8T engines... They are the only ones on the market which have an integral solid machined keyway, just like the OE ones. They are also fully machined from aluminum, not a chopped up OEM pulley- so they are lighter and stronger then other gears on the market. They have hard anodized outer rings for wear resistance- a regular anodized outer ring will get torn up by kevlar timing belts. Each gear is loaded up with stainless ARP hardware, and beautifully laser etched with timing marks. There really isn't anything else that can compare.

We also have friction disks and ARP cam gear bolts available to lock them in place- the cam gear keyway is one of the spots the 1.8t timing belt drive sometimes fails.

    Check them out here:

    Pete,

Do you have both 06a and 058 versions of your cam gear?
