Thread: HELP!!! my car keeps reving on its own will!!!!

    1. 09-14-2002 11:56 AM #1
      its a 2.0!!! 5 spd
at tymes when i started it it over reved, and at idle it will jus start reving to 2-3000 rpm at by itself!!!! i and just the yeserday on my way to drop it off at the dealership, it wouldnt start for like 5 or 6 tries!!! it runs fine and other than that 1 tyme starts fine!!!! WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM, and would it be considered under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty?????

Its not a powertrain problem. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think only transmission is covered under powertrain warranty, not engine related problems.

Thats really weird it revs up to 2-3Krpms. Are you out of warranty? If so, you may want to save yourself a buck or two and make some calls around and find a local mechanic that specializes in VW. They may even be able to give you a free diagnosis.

both engine and transmission are covered by powertrain. however, luckily for you, engine sensors and ECU are NOT covered.

Edit, I second the post below:

It sounds like you have a vaccum leak somewhere.

      thanx for the info!!!

blame the maf :/ i think the ecu is trying to compensate for not enough air going into the engine, then again, it may be a vacuum leak

If you have an aftermarket stereo hooked up it could be that the wiring was done incorrectly.

Two power wires hooked up to your after market head unit,

      1. switched

      2. always on

If you lets say, bought a blaupunkt headunit and the factory wiring harness fit perfect in the head unit, then what happened is that you have to switch the switched/with the always on power wires.

What happens is your stereo is pulling a constant current so your ecu gets mixed codes and you'll get "reving on its own, alarm malfunctions" and other problems. I had the same exact thing happen to me when I had my MKIV Jetta 2.0. I took it into the dealer and one week later they tried to charge me with a 1,100$ bill. Which I contested with Volkswagen of America and of course got VW to pay for it. They couldn't fix it, so I went home thought about it for a couple of days, pulled the head unit on this theory rewired those two wires switching them. Then the head unit stopped pulling power from the ecu when the vehicle was off and sure enough, no more reving on its own. If you have any questions just shoot me an email.. Though I could be wrong,

Is your air filter seriously dirty? Sometimes if the car doesn't get enough air the ecu does some really funny things, such as the case with a vaccum leak

Is your shoe stuck between the gas pedal and the console? Seriously, it doesn't sound like a good thing. Take to a shop!

Mine worked fine for about eight months as well. Like I said could be wrong, but I had the exact same car as you and the exact same problem.

I had the same problem as you on my X car, took me a month of torture to bring it to a dealer.

      Throttle Body.

Whats up Dustyn? That sucks.....you need to hook up with the guy in our club (dont remember his name, only met him once) with the VAG-COM and see what fault codes your running. Call Don, he may know the guys #.
Hope you get it fixed soon.
