I was curious to know what all would be involved (including the expense) in converting a Euro-spec Polo to US standards.

    To the OP, what year?

To the second guy, you can't convert your 2000 and bring it. That model has to be federalized first (crashed by DOT, and smogged by EPA). Good news is taht if you wait til 2025, you're good to go!

Would they even bother federalizing a 10 year old euro Volkswagen though? I mean would they crash test my exact model and pay to repair it? They've already been tested but to Europe standard surely It's the same test.

How come? Ive seen at least two polos that are older than mine over there, the first and second gen. Mine is a fifth gen, and loads safer.

Old cars are exempt from inspection.

That is a link to HALF the info you need. When importing, you fill out two forms, one for EPA, and one for DOT. On the second page of that document, it says "U.S. EPA requirements only." It does not cover DOT requirements.

Here's the rest of the info...

I've found a way around it now. Haha. It's fine to import it. Hopefully when I can, it'll all kick off. I got a lot of plans for the dub.

Ah, yeah sorry. Uh basically if I take over three identical models they will agree to do all the dull DOT tests on the identical ones and once they pass with flying colors I can import mine and keep it there without it being impounded and crushed.
