Would love to, but am busy most weekends.

There is a junk yard near to me, last time I drove past they had what appeared to be all kinds of really neat older vehicles out the front. I keep meaning to head out there for a look around, but never have the time. Its almost one of those if you don't know its there, you won't find it type places, on a small windy road that you come across more on accident than anything else.

    There's three around Chicago

I found several interesting vehicles at the Summit Pick N Pull on Saturday:

    1. 1963 Mercury Park Lane Caliente in turquoise. 100% complete
    2. 1986 VW Golf, automatic with 68k original miles. Granny blue and probably granny driven. Untouched rain tray. Unmolested blue tweed interior.
    3. TWO 1st Gen Mazda RX7's, one from 1979, another from 1985.
    4. '89 Golf Cabrio
    5. 1975 Mercedes E-class. No rust, perfect interior, probably collector-owned. Horribly rear-ended.
    6. 1982 Toyota Tercel
    7. And this (for sale):

    1967 Volvo Amazon WAGON

I need the driver side seat back soooo bad, I'm sitting on a metal bar.

I saw an '88 Alfa Romeo Milano yesterday. It had something like 44K miles and had a ton of good parts. Sadly not the model with Recaros. Truck full of empty oil jugs, and a for sale sign that was never used.

    It's a blue tweed seat...I hope it's still there.

I went to another junkyard yesterday. Don't ever donate to American Lung Society. Apparently, they junk all their cars....

Anyway, some crazy finds for Chicago:

1972 Mercedes 200-series coupe, old lady driven....I think someone bought it because it was in the parking lot.

    Original Blaupunkt

'74 Dodge Dart, immaculate shape, from the American Lung Society. Sticker on windshield even says "Starts and drives"

'84 Alfa Romeo GTV. Another donation by American Lung.
    WTF

'90 Jetta Wolfie. Automatic, no rust. With 100% complete interior...spray-painted in silver.

This sacrilege was dropped off as I was walking out,and attracted quite a crowd. 100% original 1971 MG Midget, original MG radio delete panel and gauges, and factory accessory spoke knock-off wheels. No rust.

    Why? Just, why?

Probably was an estate car and the survivors preferred a quick cash sale vs actually finding a buyer that would take it for 3x more....

I mean, I know it probably had terminal rot, and exactly where...but...A lot of people would have paid a lot more than that yard did.

Actually, it was (strangely) bone dry. The drivers' seat was torn, but rest of the Italian leather upholstery was soft as factory new. I bet some broseph bought it, realized he didn't know $h!t about Italian cars when it didn't start one day when the temp was under 45, donated it for a quick buck, and it ended up here.

Wow, the MG, Dart, and Alfa are a crime if they're as nice as they look.

My Golf does have the blue tweed ('85). The seat bottom is fine but the back is torn and the foam is worn so bad on the edge I'm sitting against the frame. If you'd be interested in pulling and shipping it... If not, no biggie.

They were as nice as what you see. As for the front seat backs....it looks like the knobs fell off at some point and gramma would just use her fingers to pull the metal lever (or, someone ripped out the knobs and plastic surrounds). The vinyl around that is ripped because of that. It's going to be at least a week until I can get out to that yard again, so I can't guarantee the car will be there.

Went to the yard again on Saturday, and found these:

'76 Catalina that had not been driven since 1988 (had a '88 calendar in it)

    And this:

Pristine Audi 5000 Turbo from 1981.

There's a lot of MK3 VWs there. They currently have 2 water-cooled Vanagons as well. They lump all the imports together at the end of the lot, though. They had 3 Audis, the '81 5000, a '86 5000 that was a local donation (nice shape), and an A6 that had nothing left.

Pick-N-Pull has better organization, but their prices suck.

Nothing tops my widebody Benz W126 AMG find:

The eventual outcome of finding this is somewhat famous- ever seen a black widebody 500SEC at Cars&Coffee in SoCal? Where do you think that project got started?

A Pick-N-Pull by me was having a half-off sale yesterday (where I got my sweet Blaupunkt Monza for $12).

1981 BMW 3-Series in untouched shape. I wonder what the story was with this.

1989 Volvo 240. No Rust. 89k original miles. Something's not right here. That Volvo's practically new.

1993 Alfa Romeo 164. I have a feeling I saw this car advertised locally at a fly-by-night used dealer recently; with "mechanical issues." Still, it's an Alfa:

Oh my... the Alfas really make my heart cry...

I have a general question about Junkyards: Can you go there and for example cut a piece of the bodywork to repair your car? I could use the lower corners of the windscreen frame off this Fiat 128:

The junkyards near me will let you chop pieces off, but you have to bring your own tools. A cordless Sawzall and a couple spare batteries and spare blades will get the job done.

    And now.

Note he actually didnt use the junkyard car as the base. He cut the body panels from it and put it onto a regular 500SEC.

The conversion was performed on 1985 500SEC with a kit produced from an 1983 500SEC AMG coupe saved from the crusher.

The donor was picked and pillaged pretty well before getting a hold of it but fortunately all of the vital bits were saved. 5.4 AMG modified engine, rearend and the all so gorgeous widebody kit. The donor had been issued a dismantled AZ and the decision was made to transfer all of the bits onto a healthy, California titled coupe.

Went to my local junkyard again, and found these rare birds:

'91 Sterling. No parts taken. Wonder why....

    '74 Jensen-Healy. No floor, and it wasn't cut-out, either.

And this...'84 Jetta GLI. Broke my heart.

Just depends on the junkyard. Most of the yards around here will not let you cut anything off of the cars in the yard. Which is a shame.

The things you listed arent exactly rare but what is rare is that its a round wheel arch. Only out about 1.5 years. People look for those versions all the time.

Meh, they're pretty rare around me. Considering I'm the only one who's been contributing frequently to this thread lately (with my findings of fairly-rare Midwestern vehicles), you're more than welcome to go out to your local junkyard and find some rare cars to post here as well....

The corner lenses on that Sterling are pretty rare. I never see them both intact on the few I still see on the road.

This thread is awesome... I have been to some decent lots in my time but never do I get to see anything like these... I need to find me a yard with some good Recaro's so I can snatch them up quickly... Very cool thread!
