Yeah; sign your name or make any random scribble on their disclaimer and you have free reign. Just watch out for forklifts moving cars in and out of rows... I've seen parts fall off. Luckily no one was underneath looking through whatever car was at the end of the row.

Interesting, the place by me didn't even offer that.

The junkyards that I used to go to with my dad when I was younger would let you walk around and pull your own parts. The yard that I use for parts (when needed for my cars) doesn't let me go near the yard. Walk into the office, tell them what I need and bam there it is in a bag for me. It does the trick, but I sure miss being able to walk around and pick my own parts...

Many cars featured in the thread were junked because of mechanical yet in the rust belt I've herd countless times "the mechanical was perfect, body was rusted too bad though so I sold it for parts".
I third that. Seriously, it is incredible to see some of the cars out in CA, I haven't seen many of those in years and in many cases, I've never seen them. The joys of growing up and living in New England.

Me thinks this Nitzy's used cars could work. Buy mechanical parts in Rust Belt, bring them over to west coast... BAM new car.

That would suck... My old E12 would never have been upgraded if not for random junk yard browsing.

      Seats-- Recaros, 320is
      Steering wheel-- 320is 3-spoke
Lower rear valence-- Euro-market 735i BBS aero
      Rear spoiler-- Saab 900 sedan
Front air dam-- E28 535is, flipped upside down and trimmed
      Wheels--Weds Bavaria 3-pc, found on E28 535i
Headlights-- outer projectors from E30, inner yellow H3s from Mercedes

If a yard doesn't let people look for themselves, they might see it as a liability for people to either get hurt or steal things. But the way I see it, they would be losing almost all of my potential business--there's no way their employees would have known to look on all these other cars for parts that would/could be made to fit on mine. Granted, I got most of these things on half-off days, so I spent less than $500 total... but still, multiply that by a few hundred customers and it starts to add up pretty quick.

A couple years back (2006 or 2007) I was told about a pick and pull Corrado. It was put in the yards "Fab Five" which don't get parts pulled until Sat morning at 8am. I got there at 5:30 with the wife because it had a KK rebuilt supercharger. By 8:15 the charger was pulled and then I focused on the TT exhaust parts and then the heated seats (not torn) and heat seats wiring

Thats not me its a friend who got there too late.

My score, a $65 rebuilt Charger:

TT dual downpipe and TT cat back:

Sad when things like that end up in junkyards. makes you wonder, someone must have died for that to not get sold

The junkyard that I used to go to you could walk around and pick and pull your own parts. All you had to do was check-in and pay a $5 fee which was waived if you bought anything. Now you walk into a small office and tell a person behind the counter what you are looking for. All the parts are pulled and taken apart out of view by employees only and you don't even get to see what you are looking at let alone browse for anything that might catch your eye.

CA's smog laws account for a lot of these enthusiast cars suffering an early death, I suspect.

Just figured I'd bring this back up to see if anyone had found anything cool recently.

Also, I'll be in SoCal in a couple of weeks. Where are the good junkyards at?

I missed this thread. Sadly, I've put 2 cars in the junkyard that could've been fixed for less than $300 in parts. Might as well have been a cool million for a young teenager. One was a 78 scirroco which had left rear suspension damage and was driven to the junk yard and the other was a 82 Corolla sr5 that needed a distributor, brakes, and a water pump. Neither was mint but were very reliable during its service.

At some point, it makes me wonder what's the point of junking the car after 30 years. Just sell it to a collector.

The photos above make me upset.

These are from Carinbarns.com, a great site for these types of pics. I will warn you though, it is extremely depressing.

At first I couldn't remember that Crazy Ray's had multiple locations and was about to call shenaegans on them having anything interesting. The one in Jessup never has much of anything noteworthy, unless you like acres of crappy GM sedans from the early '90s.
