After running numerous polls in our forums, campaigning endlessly to try and convince VW to offer the Golf R here and all the behind the scenes negotiations that took place at Volkswagen of America we finally have good news - the Golf R is coming to America.

Volkswagen of America announced today that it will offer the 260hp, all-wheel-drive Golf R in both two-door *and* four-door (yeah!) configurations starting 4th quarter of 2011. A six-speed manual transmission will be the only transmission offered in our market. We expect the Golf R to be available in two trim levels, both well equipped. All cars will have Climatronic and leather seating standard. The seats will be the top sport seats with "R" logos embroidered on the headrests (see photo below). The higher trim level will offer RNS-310 navigation, Dynaudio sound system, a sunroof and Kessy keyless start. Volkswagen is holding off on pricing announcements till closer to launch in 4th quarter of 2011. We expect pricing to start below $34k though so long as the dollar and Euro don't get more out of wack.

This has been a very long project that a few key people at Volkswagen of America and Germany worked hard to make happen. For the first time the Golf R will be available in both 2-door and 4-door variations in our market. Certifying two different transmissions would have been costly and drove the price up further, so the decision was made to stick with the six-speed manual. Colors will be announced later with pricing. Until then, Volkswagen of Germany is tooling things up to prepare for production next year and we'll wait patiently (yeah right) till we hear more.

      And there was much rejoycing...

Thank you, thank you, and more thank you. Room/easy access for my twins in the back. Performance for heading back to HPDE's at Homestead. What a glorious day. I won't even complain about the keyless start only being available with the higher trim level.

This is truly wonderful new Jamie. Thank you and all parties at VW on both sides of the pond.

Thank god! I was worried I would actually trade the R32 in for this one. No DSG? No sale. Thanks for the info too bad that it just eliminated me from the market. Adios Golf R.

Looks like the Autobahn GTI seats - cool. And yes, GREAT news and glad its making it. At 34K-ish with
the leather and 6spd standard, and 2 or 4dr options, it will be much more competitive than last time around.

Impressive. I very, very highly doubt I'll ever have one as I don't intend to be in the market for a vehicle in the next 10-12 years, but I'm pleased that all involved have accomplished what they have.

Plenty of people will take your place. They had them sitting on lots for long periods of time because of the 2dr and the DSG only.

Slap a supercharger on your R32 then....

x2, due to twins I was banking on the 4 door (& 6MT). Wish granted!

Anyone think front facing car seats will be an issue? Oh well, I'll worry about that later

And VW said, "Let there be Golf", and there was Golf.
And VW saw the Golf, and it was good, and VW divided the Golf from the other hot hatches.
VW called the Golf "R" and the others he called "crap".

It's been a couple of years since Volkswagen's heavyweight hot hatch, the R32, graced America's shores, but now we have official word of a successor. Tuned by the in-house R team at Volkswagen, the Golf R should be a good bit more exciting than its already entertaining forebear, and hopefully, it will shave a few pounds off, too.

Unlike the R32, which was powered by VW's popular VR6, the new model will be powered by Volkswagen's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. And while Volkswagen isn't quoting power output for the new U.S. model, the European version currently on sale conjures up 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. All of that gumption will be routed through VW's fourth generation Haldex 4Motion all-wheel drive system, which means the VW should once again be a good foil for cars like the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

Along with the power increase, VW is promising bigger brakes, an uprated suspension, 18-inch wheels, center-exit dual exhaust and a more liberally tuned ESP. Perhaps most interestingly, the Golf R will be available in both two and four doors and be paired exclusively with a manual transmission. That's right, we said it.

Although the press release after the jump doesn't mention when it will debut (our money's on Detroit), additional R accoutrements include model-specific aero bits and badging, along with upgrated trim and a new steering wheel, shift knob, and so on.

In other words, it's time to get excited.

Wow. Choice of door count AND back to a manual? This seems too good to be true! What a great move by VW, I might have to rethink my car purchase ideas over the next year now.

I'm not worried to be the guy with the fastest car on the way to work in the morning. If I was I would drive one of those plastic asian cars. It was more about refinement, comfort and the luxury the R32 brings.

Trying to justify a 6 speed to the wife is a losing battle. It isn't that I wouldn't want one...which I would...it is that its chance dropped from 50% below 1% now.

Teach your wife stick? I've done that, and it helps. The luxury and comfort is still there, just the DSG isn't.
Why not trade in for a GTI with DSG and mod it - having the stock turbo is much easier to mod and go faster than the R32. They can't appease everyone, but overall they have done a great job and are doing what makes sense cost wise too.

I was actually getting really excited about jumping ship to Subaru or Volvo. There goes that idea.

6-speed AND 4-door configuration? Sweet Jesus, someone's actually listening in Herndon. Do want, so very very badly.
