Who in Calgary is telling you this?

STI sport-pack. thats a way better car, better awd

STI AWD is way better for sure.

    1) Torsen
    2) way more adjustment (front or rear, diff lock/unlock), you can remove all the electronic.
    3) 305 hp stock

For 37K$ CDN you can get the STI, for 42K$ you get the Sti with sunroof, aluminium BBS (worth 1300$ a piece), navigator.

If the R is really 45K$, it is a friggin ripoff, shame on Vw, I wont pay that amount for a R. I drive an STI and I will sign for a new one.

$40k they have a deal and I'm quite happy. $42k and they probably have a deal depending on what else is floating around Q1/2011.

$45k and all of a sudden a 4 year old off-lease 911 or a Cayenne is in the mix, new STI sport-tech, hell might even save some money and look at a new Mustang coupe, 2 year old 335xi, hell why not a completely loaded JCW, year-old CTS AWD.....

Admittedly, they are not the right mix of features that the Golf R has, but bang-for-the-buck really does become a little eyebrow raising at $42k and really glaring at $45k...

depending on how much it costs, i'm either getting the R (have my deposit down already) or i'll just pick up a slightly used A3.
    .:R coming 2012

  5. 02-02-2011 12:38 PM #110
40k I'm buying more than that I will just wait for a used one or leftover ones that they won't be able to sell because of the big price. The A3 looks very tempting no manual tho...

    Hello all,

First post on VWvortex and I'm proud it's in the Canadian Golf R thread. I currently own an 07 GTI, 2dr, DSG, APR Stage I. I love it.

I've arranged to put a deposit down on an R tomorrow. I am fine with the 4dr, 6spd manual. If the price goes much over $40k, I am hoping for Nav, leather, sunroof and....the 19's? Or would I prefer the 18's (currently riding on the 18 Huffs)? What do you guys think?

I just built one on the VWUK website for fun and I am wondering why the the UK engine claims 270hp and the CDN version is supposedly only 256? Why would that be? Apologies if it's a stupid question.

    Great site! Thx.

Have you actually driven an STI? On paper they look great, but in reality...not so much.

First, the "adjustable" center diff is almost useless; it barely does anything to change the attitude of the car. The SI drive adjustments you can feel, but what's it's purpose? Adjusting your right foot does just as well.

Second, even though it makes 305hp, there is nothing there under 4k rpms. My old 5cyl Rabbit would have out run it if a race where shifts were kept under 4k rpms were to occur. After 4-4.5k rpm you get hit with a boost spike like a brick to the face. Sure that's fine on a track, but no so much on the street.

Thirdly, though I found it to handle amazing and have very accurate steering when driven under 8/10's (4/5's...whatever floats your boat)...that feeling went away very abruptly after 8/10's. The steering gets very rubbery and numb and the thing understeers horribly. Could have been the one I was driving, but it was almost new and wasn't messed with. The WRX I drove about year earlier did the same thing.

Lastly, I do a lot of highway driving and the STI's NVH sucks. It's really noisy and seems a little tinny at anything above 80km/h.

Not saying it isn't a great car for what it is, but it really shouldn't be compared (at least on paper) against the .:R. Same with the Evo.

the joys of our dollar being so close to par.....

I just say buy what you want from here or in the US, and if you need warranty service done, in Ontario at least, lmk, ill just work with my guys at the local dealer and tell them your up here for work, and they will cover it lol

the idea of only going for a 5 dr, I can understand why, but when you take away the ability to choose and decide for our selves, it just ruins the feeling of the car...

but meh w.e I wont be buying one, ill wait a year or 2 and see if they decide to lift the cruddy ban of the 2dr here and bring some in for us

If it sells for over $40k CDN, I'd much rather import a CPO TT-S from the States. The warranty from Audi USA is transferable (according to my sources.)

Lots of guys getting their panties in a bunch ITT. Canadian should be thankful VWoC is finally bringing the .:R to our market.

It's a premium Golf with a premium price. It's not for everyone, which is why Volkswagen is carefully introducing it. I don't see anything wrong with offering a car with all the same equipment so that one does not outweight the next in options.

Anyone wanna guess the 3 colours the Golf will be offered in?? I'm going with:
    1) Deep Blue Pearl
    2) Black Magic Pearl
    3) Tornado Red

Somehow I think they're going to drop the Candy White, wdut?

Went to Auto Show in Toronto, no GOLF R
It will be at the New York auto show so they say.

Canada is only getting 500 in 2012 ? Or 500 in the first quarter of 2012 ? They will all be
    4 door in 2012 ?
VW is 100% sure no 2012 two door model's will be sold in Canada ? If this is so, better off buying
a 2 door Golf R in United States and bringing it up here if it is allowed right away after purchase

Michael , bad news , it seems they're going to release this as a 2013 vehicle .
They are reluctant to release any info , but based on that info. we may not see this vehicle for at least a year .
I'm trying to get something more definitive.
    I'll be in touch .

    Shaun .

This better not be true. Can anybody else try to confirm this? I'm not waiting another year.

I put my deposit with VW Northland several weeks ago and yesterday got a phone call with the same news "It is probably going to be delayed till April, May but most likely June 2012".... but again, nothing is confirmed. They also told me that after the Calgary Autoshow they may have more info....

I really want this car but it is hard that they'll be sitting on my deposit for more than a year till I get the car. If they actually confirm this dates probably I'll be out

As soon as I have something new I'll post it

  23. 03-10-2011 09:08 PM #128
Thats weird. I put my deposit down with Shaun in early January and I haven't heard a word from him about a delay. I haven't spoken to him in a month but he's usually pretty good at keeping me in the loop.
Was this his response to you asking a question or did he proactively send you this?

Volkswagen Canada will honor all warranties imported from the states before model year 08, after that, warranties are no longer transferable.

    Hello Michael.

The Canadian market introduction of the Golf “R” is set for spring of 2012. This has always been the date, and based on current information there is no reason to expect any delays. As a long-time Golf/Rabbit/GTI fan, I certainly identify with your enthusiasm (my first car was a ’76 Rabbit…one of the last with the Zenith carb).

Ordinarily, we do not release information about cars that are coming to our market so far in advance, however with the “R”, we have had so much interest that a press release was felt to be in order to ensure Canadian customers that a version of this car would indeed be available in our market.

    What we can discuss is:

    · It will be available in the four door model only, and only available with a six-speed manual transmission
    · It will be based upon the European-spec version of the vehicle, and will share the 2.0L TSFI engine and all-wheel drive. Exact horsepower/torque figures are still pending
    · There will be a (limited) choice of exterior colours
    · There will likely be no options…so I hope that you like how the factory will spec them!

We are presently still in the process of hammering out the exact details with the factory on spec/availability/price. Rest assure that once we have details, we will release them to the public.

Based upon the overwhelming response I have received to date (and I’m not normally the one that hears about this kind of activity), I do know that most (if not all) of our Dealers are already taking orders for the vehicle. They will, however, not have much more detail for you other than what I have shared today.

I hope that this helps clear the air a bit, and I certainly hope that you can wait until next year at around this time.

Mine will be blue, by the way.

Have a great day, and drive safely.

Thought I'd share this with you guys. I emailed VW Canada on Friday as I was a little unsure about what the rumor mill was producing.

i was just going to say that my dealer emailed me the other day saying they expect them in December.

i guess rumours will be rumours until a firm date is announced. Personally, as much as i want mine sooner, i'd be happier with later as im locked into my jeep lease and can't ditch it until 09/12 and juggling the 2 vehicles is going to be a pain
    .:R coming 2012

It's funny, after my first point I also decided to write to Mr. Tetzlaff, below is the response I got; pretty much a template of what Mbaylis got.

Thank you for your letter. I am sorry that you are disappointed with the timeframe of the upcoming Golf “R”. It was never intended to come to Canada before April of 2012, and this date remains in place. Ordinarily, we do not release information about our cars that are still so far away from the market, but we have had such incredible interest in this vehicle that we wanted to assure Canadian enthusiasts that we would indeed get the “R” in Canada.

Here is what I can share with you today:

    · It will be available in the four door model only, and only available with a six-speed manual transmission
    · It will be based upon the European-spec version of the vehicle, and will share the 2.0L TSFI engine and all-wheel drive. Exact horsepower/torque figures are still pending

I can certainly appreciate how anxious you are to have this vehicle arrive on the Canadian market. I, too, have been waiting for this car for a long time. My first car was a 1976 Rabbit, and I’ve had a whole bunch of GTI’s since my first one in 1986.

One thing I can promise is that the car will be worth the wait!

    Drive safely.

I have a $500 deposit down that is FIRST in line at South Center Fine Cars in Calgary. I'm considering bailing out on the R and going another route. Anybody interested in buying the First in line spot from me? PM me if you'd like to arrange something.

I don't think he is. Mbaylis - I'm sure Sean will give you your money back. He told me mine was 100% refundable when I put it down - although I have no intention of backing out. I hope you go this route because that'll bump me up to number 4! Let me know what you decide to do.

#4 in line at my dealership and getting more bummed out as I read more and more about all the things we likely WON'T get in our Golf R's.

So no LED taillights for the US-spec car due to lack of DOT approval? Does Canada require the same DOT approval or is there actually a chance we might get the LED taillights here even if the US doesn't?
