Thanks. I think it will be a fresh look. How did that dash work out?

    Finally got back on this.

Got the other inner fender cleaned out.

Continued welding some holes. Got the welder working a little better so it went smoother. Weld-grind-weld-grind.

Also looking for some insight. Notch the frame rail, or just cut the pinch weld and weld it shut?

Notch. This way your covered for what ever tire/ wheel you use in the future.

I use a hole saw and it takes less than 10mins to punch the notches. Let me know if you need more info.

That is kinda what I was thinking since it is all stripped now. What size hole saw, and do you use a piece of pipe cut in half as the fill?

I use a 3" saw. Its a little bigger than you need but I like how uniform it looks around the axle. I just took some scape exhaust pipe, splayed it open, massaged it to fit the notch and traced around it. Then you can pull it out and trim to fit the opening perfectly.

Sounds easy enough. I will probably tackle that in the next few days.

One down, one to go. I am no expert welder. It was popping like crazy. Would that be because of the difference between the exhaust pipe and the sheetmetal? I had to weld and grind a bunch. I still have a little more cleaning up to do.

depends on your welder settings and if that pipe was clean and or galvinized

The settings are the same as the other patches I put in. The pipe was brand new. I am guessing galvanized is the issue.

Probably.... You also don't want to be breathing that zinc in.

I have found that most of the time the popping is because the metal is dirty. I used exhaust pipe. The only popping I had was the seam sealer was. Tough crap to get all cleaned up-

That's not totally out of the realm of possibilities. I think H2O is more realistic though.

Made a little more progress for ya.

Got the other side cut and welded in. Didn't have time to grind and reweld it.

Also finished trimming down the bumper and welding up the shortened brackets. Sorry my garage is too small to get a head on shot.

I haven't gotten that far yet. I will probably wait until the fenders and everything are back on to determine that. I also need to track down some end caps.

I have an 82 Caddy project that is going to require a heck of a lot more patchwork than yours, haha. Props to your progress though, it looks great! Maybe I'll see you at MkI Madness?

Yeah, I got lucky with the lack of rust. I would love to make mkI Madness, but I have a wedding to go to that weekend. I hope to make it one of these years.

+1 they will eventually mess you up///// and it is easy to tell if it is galvanized steel or not, if it is, you will get that white whispery film around the edges of the weld.

Call up a muffler shop, they sell aluminized steel tubing by the foot or in 6-8 foot sections.... about 3-4 bucks a foot, welds MUCH better than galvanized steel, and is MUCH safer.

hahahaha..... hopefully, right? Ive welded the crap a few times, no cancer yet.... had a fried do a whole bunch of it, said he got light headed and felt like crap for a while, so im not sure how long lasting the effects are, either way, its just another "safety" thing.

yeah, next time get plain steel sheet from your local metal store, or recycler.... i get a 2 by 4 foot sheet of 18 gauge for 18 bucks, works a helluva lot better than using old body panel, or some home depot galvanized sheet.

Had these sitting next to each other and decided to have a look. Kinda leaning toward color matching the wheels now.

Yeah. I think I like it. Have to decide if they will be all white, or if I find someone that can redo the machine finish.

Cory still has the truck, I think it is just on the back burner.

I am sure Diem could polish them. I was going to have him powdercoat them black. I kinda like the machine finish though, and would want my painter to color match the white. I will shoot Diem a message though.

I'm definitely diggin the colormatched idea. Oh and Diem, I called Ulrich's and they tracked down a castelette center cap to the tune of 60 bucks!! He said they're are only a handful left in the country now though. I'll have to decide if I wanna pony up the dough or not.

If anyone has any ideas or leads on someone that can clean up the machined finish on the lips and center caps let me know.
