Finally got back on this.
Got the other inner fender cleaned out.
Continued welding some holes. Got the welder working a little better so it went smoother. Weld-grind-weld-grind.
Also looking for some insight. Notch the frame rail, or just cut the pinch weld and weld it shut?

Notch. This way your covered for what ever tire/ wheel you use in the future.
I use a hole saw and it takes less than 10mins to punch the notches. Let me know if you need more info.

I use a 3" saw. Its a little bigger than you need but I like how uniform it looks around the axle. I just took some scape exhaust pipe, splayed it open, massaged it to fit the notch and traced around it. Then you can pull it out and trim to fit the opening perfectly.

One down, one to go. I am no expert welder. It was popping like crazy. Would that be because of the difference between the exhaust pipe and the sheetmetal? I had to weld and grind a bunch. I still have a little more cleaning up to do.

depends on your welder settings and if that pipe was clean and or galvinized

I have found that most of the time the popping is because the metal is dirty. I used exhaust pipe. The only popping I had was the seam sealer was. Tough crap to get all cleaned up-

I have an 82 Caddy project that is going to require a heck of a lot more patchwork than yours, haha. Props to your progress though, it looks great! Maybe I'll see you at MkI Madness?

+1 they will eventually mess you up///// and it is easy to tell if it is galvanized steel or not, if it is, you will get that white whispery film around the edges of the weld.
Call up a muffler shop, they sell aluminized steel tubing by the foot or in 6-8 foot sections.... about 3-4 bucks a foot, welds MUCH better than galvanized steel, and is MUCH safer.

hahahaha..... hopefully, right? Ive welded the crap a few times, no cancer yet.... had a fried do a whole bunch of it, said he got light headed and felt like crap for a while, so im not sure how long lasting the effects are, either way, its just another "safety" thing.

Had these sitting next to each other and decided to have a look. Kinda leaning toward color matching the wheels now.

I'm definitely diggin the colormatched idea. Oh and Diem, I called Ulrich's and they tracked down a castelette center cap to the tune of 60 bucks!! He said they're are only a handful left in the country now though. I'll have to decide if I wanna pony up the dough or not.![]()
