I just had a look around the rad where old Dogg said there were gaps. All I can say is Holy Hannah! Gaps is an understatement. Sealing them up will require removal of the front end. This is definitely a summer project and nothing I will do right now. I am toying with adding a Forge Twincooler and that would require the same removal work.

It has now been just over two months since installing the hood weatherstripping and thought I'd give a brief update on its effectiveness. See my post dated 1-22-2011. In a nutshell I am very pleased with the results. It is about 90-95% effective in keeping out the wintery slush and dirt. I have been able to keep the engine area pretty clean without much effort as a result. The best $28 bucks I have spent to date on the Tig .

I'd suggest that those of you who have installed these strips test their flammability. I'm betting they're very flammable. And if they come loose (due to time, temps, dirt, whatever) and get blown into the engine compartment by the strong wind forces at the front of the car, they could ignite from the high temperatures around the engine.

Definitely not a mod I will be doing. (Of course I'm not interested in the first place, because I'm not obsessed about what under the hood looks like.)

And I'm betting you think the world is coming to an end in 2012 .

I was resisting replying, but here goes. The weatherstripping is really compressed and the amount of air in the tiny slit will not be enough to dislodge it. I have no worries, but I do check everything when I open the hood as good practice. If a piece decides to come loose, it will be repaired or removed before the hood gets closed.

And Dogg, i think it is really 2018.

There may be two schools of thought on this just like 'to use or not use' the hood weatherstripping.

Here is my support for 2012: http://endoftheworld2012.net/nostradamus2012.htm

You think I'm being a panicky type over this. But I live next door to someone who watched their Audi A4 go up in flames, due to an engine compartment fire.

I appreciate your concern chrishart1. Like shawng said above, it is in there solid and it is checked on a regular weekly or bi-weekly basis.

    Cheers .

Chris, you do raise a valid point and awareness is better than ignorance. I once had a mechanic leave a shop towel on my exhaust manifold. I caught it before flames began. I am also real anal about fire safety in my garage, but then again my Ex is a firefighter. All said, i don't think we will have an issue.

Just wanted to thank shawng and Old Dogg for this thread. Just ordered my weatherstrip from the Ebay link you guys posted.

I am extremely anal about my vehicles being meticulously detailed, and the engine compartment was spotless when I bought my rig less than a month ago, and now it looks terrible. I look forward to installing the weatherstrip to help keep it clean.

Did you ever get pics of the smaller pieces near the headlights Shawn?

Pics? good question. That was over a year ago. i have problems remembering breakfast.

I will go digging, right after I find the details on how to wire the rear fog.

Say johnand, my post dated 1-22-2011 shows the two smaller pieces I added later that are near the headlights. Also, my post dated 1-31-2011 offers a couple of basic tips that helped me along the way.

It is coming up to nearly a year since putting in the weatherstripping and it is holding up really well and is about 90-95% effective in keeping out the crap. Makes life much easier keeping things clean under there.

    Good Luck!

I also installed this stuff and it is doing a great job keeping the engine bay reasonably clean.

Thanks to shawng for finding this material.

No need to wonder; the temperature on your front end was -20F. Wind chill doesn't apply to inanimate objects.

When I lived in North Dakota, I was told there were two temperatures in winter: Cold and Damn Cold. I think anything below 0F qualifies as Damn Cold!

You might be able to source the material elsewhere for cheaper on the internet, but with 3000 miles on my Tiguan and already a fine mist of particles beginning to cover components in the engine bay, I went to Autozone and picked up an 8 foot roll for $20 (a little less with Military discount). Maker is Metro Moulded Parts, Inc. out of Minneapolis, MN. (www.metrommp.com). 7/8" x 3/4" x 8ft. roll, Part number MW78348. Bulb style weatherstrip with adhesive backing.

    Measurement - 1 min

    Installation - 2 min

I used exactly half the roll - the other half will be used on my daughter's Tiguan.

Thanks to those pioneers for a) developing this field fix for this annoying problem, and b) sharing on this forum so others could follow in the footsteps of giants!
