Why Wookies?
Wookies started as a reference to the ever so sweet sound of the R32 exhaust note echoing through the Great Smokey Mountains on a a dark, desolate night.
What is Wookies In The Woods?
Wookies In The Woods is an annual gathering of .:R32 and Volkswagen enthusiasts at the ever so infamous Dragon, US129, in Robbinsville, NC. The Dragon, which is known internationally for its 318 curves in eleven miles, is the United States’ number one motorcycle and sports car road. The weekend event kicks off with small get-together meets on Friday, small group runs through the Dragon and concludes with a big group barbecue on Saturday as well as a bonfire.
Come out and see what the Dragon has to offer, and you will surely not be disappointed. However, please be sure to remember to stay on your side of the road at all times and to NEVER out drive yourself or your car. Most importantly, stay safe and be courteous to all. See you in April.
Dates: April 21, 22, 23, 24th 2011.
Place: Fontana Village
Lodge room w/ 2 queen beds or w/ 1 king bed - $85 per night.
2 bedroom 1 bath Laurel Cabin - $119 per night
3 bedroom 2 bath Azalea Cabin - $249 per night
Reservations must be paid by March 1, 2011 for special group rate.
This year will be less formally organized. We noticed over the past events that the sub groups are much better at organizing their own drives. The big drive has become to large to keep together so we encourage individuals to organize their own "parties" to explore some of the roads away from the Dragon. Please do not start new threads to do this. Do it in here. This has been requested of us to keep the event in 1 thread.
Instead of being a fully sponsored event we will be selling some apparel for funding. More details to come. We are looking for sponsors of raffle items.
A banquet or RBQ is possible. If Tapoco becomes available we may be able to do something there. Fontana is an options as well as Dragons Rest Motorcycle Resort. More details to follow.
We will have a Facebook page up for the event. This will be announced soon.
Anyone interested in designing a Wookie logo can contact us. Email is preferred and those links are in our profiles. You can contact Harepower, Mooney, or PSU.
Rules of the event
1. Stay on your side of the road.
2. Don't out drive yourself.
3. Be courteous to all.
4. Be there or be square.

A few more details...
With regard to the attendees putting drives together, we encourage the idea of groups having runs at any time and place they see fit. Of course there are always going to be those impromptu head outs from the lodge, but more specifically, if you have an idea and would like to have friends, old and new, join you, then put together a run... You can make this plenty public, and plan in advance.
We've found out (whether we wanted to or not, ala last year the Dragon being closed) that there are a LOT of good roads in the area, so explore and enjoy.
A MAIN focus, as has been the case each and every year that this event has gone on and grown, is safety. I feel I can speak for all of us both organizing things as well as all attendees over the years that this is a great time, and considered a success each and every year. The main idea is to have a great time with that exhaust note echoing through the mountains from each and every direction while keeping everyone and their cars whole, in tact and in tip top shape. We have made a good name for ourselves with the local community as a respectful bunch that "get's it" - and what "it" is is that this is a stretch of pavement that offers a great challenge, part of that being on your side of the double yellow, and knowing how to keep it all under control.
This goes for 129 as well as 28 - Hellbender can bite you and we want to also point out that while it is not as windy and tight as the Dragon, it is easy to let it get away from you... stay alert, stay safe.
There will be plenty of details ebbing out, but as Chris said, we are leaning to a looser event, one that allows for a lot more driving and a lot of fun to be had however YOU want to have it! After all, it is the people that come that make this thing such a great time...
So looking forward to this!

Very cool. While I have never been on the Dragon in a car, I have done it many times on a bike. There is not much scarier than being heeled over commited to a left hander than to have a car come around on my side of the line. My head of course, is the furthest thing out there and does not want to ruin the headlight! I appreciate the call for safety![]()

I am in with a passenger. Any idea of approximate costs? Its about a 700 mile drive so a few hundred in gas, I figured out the price of the room and average cost of gas. What are you guys spending in food and misc stuff?

Depending on how hard and how much you drive, you will need an extra $200-$300 for gas alone while down there. Also keep in mind that gas is a little more expensive in the area compared to up north.
Food is all dependent upon you. You could rent a cabin and just cook for yourself to save money. There isn't much food in the area anyway. You have to drive all the way into Robbinsville for grocery stores and fast food.
Any specific questions, shoot me a PM.![]()

Aim high.
Assume 500$ for gas, since you always end up using more than you think. 500$ in gas, assuming ~3.40$ a gallon, goes insanely fast. Not sure what the R32s make under duress, but I was averaging 10MPG the whole entire time I was down there last time, and I doubt a 3.2L V6 makes much better when you're moving quickly![]()

I attempted to venture over to the Dragon yesterday but thankfully we turned around...
I keep in touch with Cathy Cherrington who owns and runs Dragons Rest Cabins and she told me it was shut down yesterday due to a very bad accident.

Count me in (possibly with a co-pilot this year).
