With my B6 '09 wagon, when I turn off ESP by pressing the console button, the icon flashes on the dash display and then goes out. Is this working correctly? I would think it would flash when ESP is on and it has encountered slipping and corrected. With the button set to off, I would think the light would stay lit on the dash?

What is this you speak of?
I've never hear of this. I thought on the 08.5 and above passats when you hit the esp button it just turned the traction control portion of esp off while still having the light flash annoyingly.

on my 08, the ESP light stays lit on the instrument cluster when I turn it off.

the Passat uses a TRW system for the ESP components, unlike the Golf/Jettas getting the ATE system.

You probably have an fsi engine also, which means your car is an early build 08.

Bentley manual still lists TRW for the ABS/ESP controller for the CCTA engines.

Mine is a 2009 wagon with the TSI engine. I am trying to make sure ESP is working correctly because this weekend it did not seem too stable in light snow. I also noticed that the OEM Contis were down to 6/32 all around before the 20k rotation. Not my experience with the Michelins on my Jetta or other Contis I have had.

If your ESP switch light on the center console is on then it means you turned off the system.

I guess that is my point, when I switch ESP off from the center console (there is no light in the console switch), the icon on the dash flashes. On my Jetta when I turn ESP off with the switch on the console the icon in the dash stays lit, not flashing. It seems to me the Passat wagon should be the same way, turn ESP off, the light stays illuminated in the dash.

I tried the same thing the other night with the same results. I just got a B6 wagon back in Sept after selling a 2000 Jetta (w/ traction control). The Jetta light would stay on if you turned the system off. The Passat light flashed a few times then stayed off. I floored it a few times to see what the deal was...it certainly was off, but didn't like that there was no way to tell if the system was on or off other than intentionally getting the fronts to break loose (easy enough when they're covered in snow). I will try and remember to ask the service tech tomorrow when I bring my car in to have the hvac looked at...the is only air flow on full blast (4).

Are you saying the idiot light should stay on in the dash (not flash then go out) when you turn ESP off on the console. I need to go in this week for 20K maintenance, so I would like to be able to tell them what to look for.

i believe his post for the resistor was for the hvac fan issue.

in my passat when ESP is off the light with the pic of the car is lit up in the dash display there is no light on the esp button on the console... wen esp is on there are no lights on on the dash unless u lose traction then the light will flicker on the dash display and then go off once u regain traction

It should stay on when you disable ESP. For kicks, in the snowy parking lot I was doing scandinavian flicks to force the ESP to kick in (like the ATE MK60's on the Golf/Jetta/GTI/GLI), and didn't kick in with the ESP off.

From what I can tell, VW is still using a TRW 440 ABS/ESC controller on the 09+.

Yep, have the dealership check it out.

I am certainly going to have the dealer check it out. Those of you out there with '09s and newer, does the light stay on in the dash when you turn off ESP? Seems it does with '08s and earlier and it certainly does with my '06 Jetta.

Could be there is a problem with all the '09s and newer?

My 06 6mt the light stays illuminated on the cluster also the button(ESP OFF) on the center console stays illuminated.

I know the 09 GTI's when you turned off the ESP. The button near the shifter would illuminate and cluster light would flash at you.

Thanks everyone, but trying to keep this specific to '09 and newer Passats as it appears there are some behavioral differences in the idiot lights for the newer models.

Hate to state the obvious, but have you checked your owners manual? I would think it's explained in there.

Yup...not handled too well in there. Those of us with '09s and newer just want to know how the idiot light behaves when you turn off ESP. My wife makes the point, how do I know if it is on or off, if I turn it off and it flashes for about 10 seconds on the dash then stops illuminating? What becomes the difference there and ESP being on altogether?

Nice try, but it's not explained that well. So I tried turning off ESP again after getting my car back from the dealership, it was a resistor (this one better last longer than 4 months!) and it did more this time around. When I press the ESP button the MFD displayed "TCS Off" and the light blinked and continued blinking while the system was off. The button did not illuminate or visually depress. When I press the ESP again the MFD display said "TCS On" and the light goes off. When I let loose in the snow with ESP off the light flashed vigorously, but the system did not engage...

      Hope that helps.

Doesn't the light flash vigorously when ESP is on and you encounter slippery conditions as well?

Further concern for me. The MFD does not say TCS off/on when I depress the ESP button on the console. Maybe this was a change after '09. I will ask the dealer.

Yes, it does. When I turn ESP off the light flashes about every second, but when the wheels slip and the system would normally engage the light flashes vigorously. What I am saying is that the light flashes the same way when the system encounters slip no matter if the system is on or off. I just don't like having the light flash slowly as an indicator of the system being off (other than the MFD display when first turning it off, which goes away after a few seconds).

I don't think VW would make 09 an oddball

Agreed, but we haven't heard from another '09 yet. Didn't VW sell some Passats in 2009?

Yea... But it still isn't practical that VW would change it just for the 09 and then bring it back 2010.. I think something is up with yours. I also think that you're hoping for the .001% chance that 09's are different so u dont have to get your car checked out. You really have to look at tw facts here.

But if you wish... I will have my friend to check his 2008 and his dad's 2009. I really don't think it will be different

Plus if u have an 09 aren't u still covered under warranty?

And if u have a question call a dealer or vw and ask what its suppose to do specifically for an 09 you've gotten responses from 06-07 and a 2010 and u don't like any of them.

Are you questioning if something working now or just the notification

Going to the dealer Friday. Just wanted to be prepared. And I do think there is a possiblity that only the '09 is behaving this way. Other than the fact that I haven't felt it has performed in the snow recently, I never recall the message in the MFD like the others have said. Maybe I have the MFD configured differently.

When I turn off ESP, my dash idiot light flashes for about 8 sec. then turns off. No change in the MFD. Likewise when I turn ESP back on, no change in the MFD. With ESP on and Off the idiot light will come on in wheel spinning.

Just wanted to know what I am talking about before visiting the dealer.

Still looking for an '09 Passat whose ESP behaves/misbehaves in this manner (no message on the MFD and no way of knowing whether ESP is on or off).
