x-posted from the MKVI forum -- has anyone been able to successfully change the default volume on the BT voice prompts?

I got my VCDS cable from Ross-Tech the other day and have been playing around making all the usual updates.

One thing I'd really like to do however, is change the default volume of the voice dialing prompts on the 9W7 bluetooth module. I did see a post or two mentioning this, and in 77-telephone adaptation there is a channel called "Base Volume of Speech Output." The default value is "4.76837e-007 db" (basically, 0), and I was able to change this to different values. I tried -2, -3, and -6, and although the coding was accepted, there does not seem to be any difference in the volume.

Just wondering if anyone has been able to successfully change the speech volume, or if there is a different/additional setting I need to make in order for it to take effect.

    TIA!

To clarify: yes, you can change the prompt volume with the in-car volume controls, but the problem is that the voice prompts and the call volume are tied to the same control. What ends up happening is that you have to turn the volume down during voice prompts (so you don't break your eardrums), then you have to quickly turn it up when the call connects. Call volume on the phone itself (Moto Droid) is maxed.

There are two separate adaptation channels, one for each volume, but for the life of me, can't get the volume for the voice commands to behave. I set it lower and it will only stay lower for the current session. Once the car is turned off and back on the volume raises again, but the stored value remains the same. i gave up after many attempts.

Well, that's disheartening. Same experience here.

I have it set at -6 db and it is perfect... until I turn it off and on. I even tried setting the BT audio higher so that they would be closer to balanced and then I could just turn it down at the radio, but oh no, that setting is at max already. This is a no win situation at this time unless someone can figure out the voodoo.

Yeah, I was hoping someone would know of some other bit that has to be set in order for the stored value to be used. It's odd that it retains the value, but doesn't seem to pay attention to it on restart.

This was an issue for shawng:
    http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...-coding-needed

I retrofitted that module and I don't have any functionality concerns with it. Some modules will default adaptation values after the diagnostic session has ended. My 9W2 (base phone module) was like that in a few channels. Some radios will do the same and adaptation is only for diagnosis.

Bump this back up with a complete Auto-Scan after the weekend and we can compare notes and adaptation values.

I primarily use a Droid 2 with this module. Unlike the old 9W2 phone module, it can't seem to sync 2 phones at one time?

Dana, do you have the same issue with the volume of the voice command too loud?

Same coding as mine. Is there any way to get a report of all the adaptation channels.

No I don't .. but that's my personal opinion. I've never had a car with voice command to compare it to either.

The newer UDS modules (like this telephone module) do not support conventional measuring blocks or adaptation channels so the control module maps are not possible. We could manually note the stored adaptation values and list them here.

Just an FYI, it doesn't really seem to be a personal preference issue -- for folks that are having the issue it's like this -- basically, when you have your system volume set at a level where you can hear your phone calls, if you engage voice command, the volume is so deafeningly loud that people outside the car can hear it.

So, it sounds like your setup is not behaving that way.

I personally have my BT phone in-call volume set at about 24 to hear the person very clearly. When I hit the voice control the lady comes on and is so freaking loud the speakers sound like they are gonna pop. If I turn the down the volume of the lady speaking to a normal level it will also turn down the in-call volume which then cannot be heard very well. It sounds like this is the same issue everyone is having.

yup, that about sums up the issue.

@ Dana, it is -19C outside right now and while warmer in the garage, this will have to wait. I hope someone else can do this in a warmer locale.

What actually needs to be done? Being new to VCDS, I'm not familiar with all of the terms & procedures.

Sorry for the delay. Due to the winter season I'm a little limited on car/shop time as well.

    My default was:
    http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/333...olumestock.png

I made a bunch of changes, ending with this last night:
    http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/9...olumeafter.png

I locked the car overnight so I believe my summary is pretty accurate, ruling out a key or sleep cycle altering the results:

The volume of the voice command (spoken volume from the female voice) seems to have 2 settings.

    1) When the radio is Off and the button is pressed I believe the adaptation value is accurate. After the adjustment ( reducing the channel value ) I can hardly hear her voice.
I don't normally press that button with the radio off and I will admit it was quite loud with default adaptation values.

    2) When the radio is On the volume of the telephone controls the voice command and the actual volume of the calls. My observation is that I have the Minimum Telephone Volume settings in the RNS set near the 1/4 mark. Normally I turn down the Navi and Tele volume when I am finishing up a trip or phone call, so I never had a complaint in this area.
See if the RNS/RCD has a [Sound] button menu for Telephone volume. This seems to control the min start-up volume and increases the volume if the knob was turned below that setting. Ex: If I turn the volume off and the phone rings it starts at the 1/4 way mark I have selected there.
I didn't try messing with this while driving, but I wouldn't doubt the speed sensitive volume (overall radio settings) would also change the telephone volume with vehicle speed.

So in scenario 1, is the phone call volume also affected by the adaptation value?

I cannot comment on the call volume (since I didn't have anyone call with the radio off) but the voice command level was accurate to the adaptation value IMO.

This remains the only thing that really bugs me about my car... the deafening volume of the BT lady. I assume no further discoveries have been made on how to separate the call volume from the voice control volume, but thought I would ping this thread just to see. TIA.

Unfortunately, the BT lady volume is just not adjustable independently of the telephone reception level. No one has found a working volume offset setting just for the BT lady.

I have the same problem, I have used multiple phones from multiple os's (android, blackberry, and ios). I get the same results with every phone that I try. When the bluetooth volume on the phone is maxed out I have to have the car's volume 3/4 to max depending on how much noise is coming in from the outside of the car. If I have the car's volume up that high when the bluetooth lady comes on I cringe from the sounds the speakers make. I have already had to have 2 speakers replaced in my 11 JSW and I am convinced it is due to this issue as I never have the radio volume above 1/4 . I just got my Ross-Tech cable yesterday so I am a bit hesitant to start messing with any of the coding right away on my own. If anyone has a fix to this i would GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks guys!
