I still haven't had any chance to break out the dslr to take good pics of my newest and final version of the flapper switch but here are some iphone pics.

It is engraved the same way VW engraves their OEM buttons.

When the flapper is open it just displays identical to the ESP button as far as color.

When the flapper is closed it lights up orange.

When the flapper is open and the headlights are on the button lights up 100% exact match red.

This is definitely my favorite mod I have done. I kept taking it farther until I accomplished what I wanted...a flapper button that looks like it came from VW, and I finally achieved that goal.

With the $80 switch is it just plug and play? In other words is it straight forward to wire (like most switches) and just snaps into the place of the blank plastic pieces? No custom fabrication required?

I'd be interested in a group buy on the switches if we can get one going and if this sketchball doesn't disappear with everyones money

    Thanks for a great DIY!

Updated my pictures above as I just noticed I posted the same picture twice. It's fixed now and I've posted the button showing the matching red.

It's close to plug and play. Since the switch itself is a momentary switch a relay is needed. The relay requires 6 wires running to it for it to work. Nothing custom is needed though.

My plan is to put some kits together for people interested. They would include all precut wiring, custom button, instructions, and anything else necessary. The problem is that the guy who made my switch has completely disappeared. No one has gotten returned emails back from the guy in over 2 months now. I'm pretty sure he's an old gent so maybe he kicked it? Hopefully not, but he definitely could care less about his business and that showed the entire time I was dealing with him.

So I'm taking matters into my own hands. I am in the process of nailing down making custom Mk5 buttons/switches myself. If all goes according to plan and I am 110% happy with the product then I will offer them for sale with great customer service. When it comes to that point I will also offer other button designs, not just my exhaust button.

So sit tight and hopefully in a few weeks I will have this nailed down.

Thanks. I'm not going to lie...it's definitely not a walk in the park to recreate this. It would help if I was an electrical engineer but I'm not. Despite that we are slowly picking it apart.

I thought the hard part at the moment is recreating the switch, no? Didn't you already figure out the electronics aspect?

Electronics have been figured out, the stumbling block was the custom relay, but a solution has been found for that. I've been waiting forever on getting the correct switch as I can only get it from Germany. No one in the US carries it.

I already have a good idea of how to recreate the button face, but unfortunately just have to wait for the parts to come in.

    Here's the latest update:

I have no idea how this guy makes these button faces. I have yet to match the black. So unless any other ideas come to mind of how the button faces are made it looks like I will have to order the buttons from him. The wiring kit and direction I will have to do myself.

Saw your thread, and it reminded me off these OEM buttons:

    http://oemplus.com/index.php?main_pa...roducts_id=307
    http://oemplus.com/index.php?main_pa...roducts_id=337

Yeah they aren't as nice as those custom ones, but they should fit nicely in that row of buttons.

Give me a few days or so. I'm home visiting some vw friends and tomorrow is a big install BBQ so we will shoot some ideas around for the custom buttons. If we can't get it there's always the option of using a W button, which I already have, or just order the exhaust buttons from the guy that made mine. He is cutting me a deal but not as good as I had hoped for. Maybe if I can get a bigger order I could talk him down some more.

After tomorrow I should have a pretty good idea about how to move forward with the buttons.

Liking this idea. "Wookie mode" that's fantastic! I like the pipes button better, but I'd settle for the Wookie. Keep us posted! This is such a cool idea.

Hi, I have a two questions.

My friend tried to do the flapper switch for my car, however, it didn't work.

Will it be because I took the resonator out?

and Does the flapper tube (vacuum hose) need to be connected? or disconnected?

I think a wire is not working properly, we're not so sure.

It doesn't matter if the res is there or not.

The vacuum hose definitely needs to be attached to the flapper valve. It can't work without it.

Feel free to send me a PM and I will try to help you get it working.

The update is that I gave up trying to make the custom buttons. I went through probably 20 different types of black paint and nothing would match. I have no idea how this guy makes them.

So if you guys really want them still we need to get numbers so I can try to get the best deal possible on the buttons and relays.

Also I'm not exactly sure how much all of you want to spend on this. The button/relay alone will probably cost around $60 and then there is still the wiring kit that needs to be added (not sure of cost yet).
