Got almost everything in today to rebuild the bottom end but I did forget new wrist pins.

    ABA Block
    New:
    Main Crank bearings
    Rod bearings
    Piston rings
    Crank seals
    Intermediate shaft seals
    Thrust Bearings
    Baffle pan
    Oil Pan

The block past inspection with flying colors and nothing over sized had to be ordered

Might want to consider tighter tolerance rod bearings

    Like .25+ oversized?

This is what I bought: Kolbenschmidt
Connecting Rod Bearing Set; Standard with Journal Oil Holes
Specifically for diesel engines plus gas 16V and newer 8V engines, this set can be used on older 8V engines as an upgrade. 1 set per car.

No .25 would be for a cut crank. They make bearings that have tighter tolerances in smaller increments. I would have to go digging through the tech forum for the info.

And measure the journals before deciding on what size bearings. I would rather have an engine built on the tight side with freshly polished crank journals than having an engine built loose without touching the crank.

Now that the GTi build is about wrapped up and ready for fluids, I am 4 expansion plugs and 2 oil galley plugs away from assembling the 2.0 bottom end. Got the plug kit from TT some love for the advertisers.

It's been 3 months and still no sight of my euro belts and manualk regulators and I am not getting responses from the shop in Germany that sold them to me I would have finished the interior by now but those two items have me by the balls.

Intermediate shaft bearing installation, expansion / oil galley plug and oil squirter installation pics on an ABA block for kicks. Enjoy

Note the 2nd to last pic is an expansion plug installed where the PCV system used to tie in to the bottom end. Please note that some threads and websites say to use a 35mm plug, that is incorrect! You should use a 40mm plug

Let's stray from the craziness of the forum for a minute and help a brother out. No bull**** just tech info.

OBD1 ABA bottom end: Stock Forged Crank, stock forged rods and stock aluminum pistons.

What would you consider to be the threshold for the pistons in terms of HP? I am pretty sure the crankshaft and rods will do well but the pistons? Remember boys it's a G60 that will be turbocharged rather than super charged.

I honestly don't know what the stock piston limits are.

Stock pistons are cast, as all stock VW pistons are.

I would be more worried about the rod bolts than anything else as they are usually the first weak point.

See that's the kind of stuff I like to know.

So a cast aluminum piston must have it's weaknesses no?

Yep, but you won't hit it unless you are trying to break the 300 hp barrier. It would probably be in the 350 hp area. Even then I doubt the piston will be the issue.

I have seen 16v's with stock bottom ends hit 450+ and the thing that lets go is the rod bolts.

ARP rod bolts/ Main bolts / Head studs are a must for higher horspower stuff.

The stock replacement rod bolts are really weak compared to the originals. And they have to be replaced since the stock stuff is stretch bolts. This goes for the mains too.

ARP stuff is 100 bucks for actual VW made rod bolts, 100 bucks for the mains and 100 bucks for the head stud kit.

That is where I would put my money instead of pistons. If you are really worried about the rods look into SCAT rods. They are cheap and come with ARP hardware. Or Integrated Engineering for a couple more bucks.

If you need ARP part numbers let me know I have them written down.

Also in case you were wondering the Corrado has a unique rear-view mirror mount that it does not share with any other car.

Now that's the kind of tech **** I am talking about. The weakness is in the studs all the way around and I will be spending money on that. It's amazing how many people spend thousands on internals when stock can hold up to reasonable HP gains.

BTW the Corrado windshield has a special film that detects and rejects any other type of rearview mirror.

i had a friend with a 16v that had a stock bottom end pushing 450hp at the wheels and he drove it 60 miles to work every day...alot depends on the driver...

I would also suggest having the rods balanced and then shotpeened if you want some extra strength from them. Also have the crank balanced.

It will make everything rev much smoother and is a bit of piece of mine for not much money.

The special film you are referring to is listed in ETKA as the anti-f*cktard film. True story.

I believe it. The 16v I am referring to is Jesse Padila's car and had a boost spike on the dyno. Last they saw it hit around 560 before the bottom end let go. Split the block.

We have a few local cars that put up those kind of numbers on stock bottom ends as well. Of course the ended up breaking other things like driveline and such.

Kyle if you're going that far you should cryo everything too.

Hope this car will be awd or

Cryo is too expensive compared to the rest of that. Ever looked into the prices?

Here are some part numbers to get you started.

    ARP:

Head Studs: 204-4701 (these are undercut and not the standard cut. You want this for a street car)
    Main Studs: 204-5402
    Rod Bolts: 104-6004

Eurospec also sells head studs and main studs. The main studs are alot cheaper through them but they are not ARP so you may have to call to get a rating on the bolt from them.

Yea Jesse's car is one am referring to. He's a boost addict.

Cryo is the way to go if you want to put down power and not break things though. Good investment.

Sweet, I will invest in the ARP studs just to be sure. ABA blocks are simple to buy and build but I have all winter so I need to have some patience and do it correct the 1st time. Wanna have fun when the car hits the road. Top end will be completely beefed up but as I had suspected, a solid stock bottom end can hold some pretty good numbers as you had pointed out.

350hp in a G60 will be a ton of fun. I built mine for that range

Rolling starts can help a little bit bit that problem
