Thread: A4 headlight switch... cheap replacement.... same as MK4 VWs?!?

  1. 01-23-2011 11:57 PM #1
Am I smoking mountains of crack again, or does this $20 headlight switch look way too much like an A4 headlight switch?

    http://www.dealextreme.com/p/volkswa...itch-mkiv-1209

It's labeled as a VW MK4 headlight switch, but it looks spot on to the switch in my 2002 Sedan.

I would love to replace the switch in my A4. The previous owner was a lady who had really fricking long acrylic fingernails, and the entire fricking interior has scratch marks all around the controls from her freaky-deaky dracula-like talons. It works fine, it's just ugly as flock... as in, the black coating is scratched through to the translucent backlit plastic. I hate to blow $160+ just for a simple cosmetic fix, but $20 is pretty much a no-brainer (especially with free shipping).

I've been googling this thing for the last 15 minutes, and can't determine if the MK4 headlight switch is the same part as the A4. I mean, there might be slight variations for MK4, such as DRLs, fog lights, rear fogs, etc. IIRC< all US spec MK4s have DRLs, so they don't have a separate parking light only position. My car has front and rear fogs (as do all US A4s, I think).

Wont work. You can plug it in but it's completely different electrically/internally.
I have an 03' A4 and an 04' VW and several VW HL switches, ...no worky.
Can't remember the outcome, but I think the running light actually do NOT turn off w/ the VW switch installed.

You know what, I may change my mind on this one-- I was just out messing around and it looks like the VW switch may work with the proper coding.
I did the fog wire jump/ ROW coding with vagcom and my US model VW GLX headlight switch works. The switch I have doesn't have a separate rear fog position so pulling OUT for fogs turns the rear fog on too.
A little more testing ...but looks OK from here.

If the pins are there, and they just fall on the wrong contacts... with a little math you can probably push the terminals out of the wiring harness and relocate them to the correct pins.

I remember doing this way back in the day when I put Audi 4000 signal, wiper and CC stalks in my Scirocco.

Heh... I used to work for an auto salvage yard.

Looking to try this switch with my '03 A4 Avant. Looks to be the same. I have seen a few pages that say it will work if you change the code to "Rest of World" using a VAG-COM.

    Did you get it working?

Hey don't mean to bring this back from the dead, but do you think that that the removable plastic and the knob could be used as a cheap replacement for a warn out headlight switch on a b6 a4?

Just buy the chrome Mk4 version off Ebay. Direct fit (unless you have the auto/ coming home option on your Audi) and looks 100% better.
